Manly Warringah 2006/07 Green Shield
Manly Warringah District Cricket Club | December 27, 2024
The 2006/07 Green Shield season was one of immense success. This is both looking at the season itself, as well as its production of some of the clubs best future talent.
Club stalwarts such as Adam Gummer, Logan Weston and Jarrod Walter came out of the side, as well as successful Grade players such as Matt Mee, Nick McCallum-Toomey and Ed Burgess.
The extended squad also included a very young Javed Badyari and an even younger Sam Gainsford.
They played 6 regular season matches, winning 6 convincingly. Their Semi-Final was a heart stopping 7 run victory over Penrith, ensuring their path to the Grand Final against Campbelltown.
This match didn’t quite go to plan with the Tahs losing the toss on a dampish wicket, and the Ghosts going on to record a 10-wicket victory. However, Campbelltown were by far the dominant team in the competition and thoroughly deserved their premiership. Just another part of our colourful Green Shield history over the past 25 years.
The standout for the season was Jarrod Walter. His 445 runs broke Richard Fry’s long standing Green Shield record for the most runs in a season of 399, set in 1982-83. This was not broken until Joel Davies hit 501 runs in the 2018-19 season.
Jarrod hit 2 centuries, almost unheard of in Green Shield. One of them was a brilliant 122 against Hawkesbury, and the other was 103* in the opening match of the campaign against Gordon to set the tone for the campaign.
He captained the team skillfully throughout the campaign, and was rewarded for his efforts with selection in the NSW U/17 side in that off-season.
The side was well coached by the legendry Peter Philpott and assisted by David Gainsford.
