question
Q: Vale Bob Guthrie.

One of Mosman Cricket Club’s great men sadly passed away during the week. Bob had been involved with MCC for nearly 50 years.

Many of those spent on the sidelines watching his son Cameron play U9s and all the way through to 1st Grade.

Bob joined our Committee in the late 1980s and would remain there for over 30 years. Always prepared to help wherever he could, Bob was heavily involved in the club’s fight to save itself from relegation in the mid 90s. A fight every player is now grateful for.

Bob was also a decorated SCA umpire and spent many years driving around Sydney helping games of cricket run smoothly. In his later years, Bob spent every Saturday sitting on the hill at Allan Border Oval watching our current youngsters do their thing.

Bob was a life member along with his son Cameron. The only father and son Life Members of our club. Both will be remembered this Saturday afternoon at AB Oval. Rest in peace Bob.

question
Q: Mosman Cricket Club remains hopeful of taking out this year’s Sydney Grade Cricket Club Championship despite an unsuccessful weekend for the Club’s First XI.

After a disappointing loss to Campbelltown on Saturday, the Whales’ first grade team travelled to Penrith on Sunday for the final of the one-day competition.

Hopes were high for the team’s first piece of silverware this season.

However, the game was all but over after the Whales were rolled for only 120 runs after electing to bat first.

Q: Fifty years ago, Mosman’s Poidevin-Gray side won the competition undefeated in its six matches.

Eight members of that 1973-74 team enjoyed their 50-year reunion yesterday. Unfortunately, two members of the original 11 had since passed away and two were uncontactable.

Whilst several of the team went on to have long and illustrious careers with the MCC and at higher levels of cricket, one player achieved a feat in the competition which will probably never be replicated… and it was not Allan Border.

Alexander Racklyeft (‘Sandy’) was an opening bowler who swung the ball both ways and at good pace. He took an amazing 51 wickets at an average of 6.6 in six matches. ! Bear in mind these were one-day matches, (60overs each) but you could win outright, and the final was a two-day game over consecutive Sundays.

Q: Scott Jacobson made his first grade debut for Mosman in 1981 and in a career spanning 17 years with Mosman and Western Suburbs he scored 5,975 first grade runs at an average of 32.29, scoring 6 centuries and 40 half centuries.

A very talented batsman who played NSW Under 19s, NSW Schoolboys and NSW 2ndXI, Scott shares his journey in the game.

At what age did you make your first grade debut in grade cricket and can you remember how you performed in debut?

I was 17 and in those days you played a redraw at the end of the season. I got picked to play against Balmain and Bankstown. I got 17 from memory against Balmain. I remember hitting an on drive for 4 and Tony Steele Balmain’s captain virtually stopping the game and saying “see that’s how you hit an on drive” it was a nice touch from a respected hard core grade veteran. I then played against Bankstown with Len Pascoe, lucky me, I didn’t get many in that game.

Q: Whales in solid fightback - Mosman Cricket Club 14 January 2002

In other grades, there was a mixture of results, with the highlight of the round a marauding innings in third grade from the ageless Craigie Hughes.

Hughes made a quickfire108 runs, hitting no less than eight sixes during his short stay at the crease.

In only his second game for the season, Hughes has wholly and solely given the thirds an opportunity to protect their top-six position on the table.

However the modest Hughes described his innings as more butchery than style.

“My timing was out and, on most occasions, it was really only pure strength that enabled me to bash the ball over the boundary,” he said. “If I was in better form, I’m sure I could have hit 14 or 15 sixes for the day.

Q: Whales chasing more than their tail - Mosman Cricket Club 7 October 2001

Mosman Cricket Club chased a lot of leather on the weekend and in most grades they’ll need to bat way above expectations if they’re to take the points this Saturday.

However, one team brimming with confidence at the moment is the First XI, who completed their third victory of the season in a one-day match against Eastern Suburbs on Sunday.

Leading the charge was skipper Martin Haywood, who celebrated his birthday by guiding his team to victory with an imposing innings of 79 not out.

Q: Whales take the points in local derby - Mosman Cricket Club 7 January 2022

The Mosman first grade team celebrated the New Year with a convincing victory in a one-day match against local rivals Manly Warringah.

The victory ensured Mosman’s position in the finals of the one-day competition, and also consolidated the team’s position at the top of the overall table.
The star of the day was Brett Erickson, who has just returned from a successful stint with the NSW Under 19 team.
Brett picked up three wickets with his leg spinners and compiled a handy 60 runs with the bat.
Mosman skipper Martin Haywood was full of praise for his young charge.
“Brett has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few months,

Q: Mosman Cricket Club is enjoying its most successful start to a season for many years.

Leading the charge is the Club’s first XI, which is currently six points clear at the top of the table after making mincemeat of Hawkesbury last weekend.

The team was at full strength, with both Shane and Brett Lee making solid contributions.

Shane made some runs and took some wickets, while Brett also took a few wickets and generally intimidated most batsmen as he continued his preparation for this week’s First Test in Brisbane.

Skipper Martin Haywood continued his phenomenal run, with another half-century and he has now compiled nearly 500 runs this season.

Q: Yates sixes and the good and bad news for Whales - Mosman Cricket Club 4 February 2002

The seconds made light work of their run chase, requiring only another 40 runs to complete victory on Saturday morning.

Major highlight was the big hitting by skipper Andrew Yates, who peppered the Mosman neighbourhood with some of the biggest sixes seen in many years.

Yates said a recent dedication to fitness contributed to his efforts on Saturday.

“I was sick of huffing and puffing my way through every game, and thought that a bit of fitness work would not only add to my enjoyment but also improve my performance,” Yates said.

Q: Lower Grades keep the Faith – Mosman Cricket Club 3 December 2001

A diabolical weekend for Mosman’s first XI was somewhat offset by continuing improvement from the club’s lower grades.

The addition of The Rawalpindi Express – Shoaib Akhtar – to the Mosman attack was not enough, although Shoaib has impressed in his first two games for the Whales.

Shoaib has fitted in well and is enjoying his time at the Mosman Club.

“I am also learning more about Australian conditions, which is important for me” he said. “Only on Sunday, one of the lower grade bowlers, James Sinclair, showed me some balls I had never seen before.

Q: Mosman Wales on a roll – October 2001

The Mosman Cricket Club is enjoying one of its most successful starts to a season for some years now.

The Whales passed the hefty Northern Districts total of 377 runs with sixteen overs still up their sleeve.

Mosman had two centurions on the day, Michael Gerits and the prolific Martin Haywood. They were backed up by Shane Lee who completed a handsome 82, while Herman Schliebs finished unbeaten on 47.

Haywood was generous in his praise for Gerits.

“Michael is clearly one of the competition’s most under-rated cricketers, and week-in, week-out performs outstanding feats with both bat and ball,” Haywod said.

question
Q: Mosman Cricket Club enjoyed one of its most successful weekends this season with four of the club’s five teams claiming victory over their Parramatta rivals.

Most importantly, Mosman’s first XI enjoyed a 10 point outright victory, which pushed them into outright fourth position on the table.

From an individual viewpoint, there were many outstanding performers in the first XI victory.

Big Martin Hayward enjoyed a return to form with a polished century. He was well supported by a cavalier innings of 72 from Peter Schliebs, and a steady half-century from Ben Sullivan.

Saturday’s results against the University of NSW proved that Mosman’s top order batsmen are gradually overcoming their reputation of susceptibility.

There were two big centuries and six half-centuries scored across the grades, with the 153 scored by first grader Andy Strauss a highlight of the round.

Equally impressive was new recruit Rex Sellers who continued his giant killing run with an unbeaten 132 in third grade.

Equally prolific at the moment is new recruit, Rishad Contractor, who shared a massive partnership with Sellers and along the way helped himself to 97 runs. Contractor has taken the club by storm this year and, at his current rate, will be in first grade by Christmas.
