Although Mosman threw away the opportunity to complete a clean sweep of all five grades, Saturday’s mixed results has not harmed the Club’s chances of taking out this year’s Club Championship title.
While the Whales’ first XI stumbled against the unspectacular Penrith attack, the second, third and fourth grade teams all completed victories.
Unfortunately, the fifth XI followed the lead of their first grade colleagues and collapsed in pursuit of what was nothing more than an average target.
The Whales remain perched perilously close to the top of the Club Championship table, and a consistent performance across all grades this weekend will ensure the dream remains a reality.
There were no star performers this round, although the third and fourth grade games were veritable heart-stoppers.
The thirds won by three runs, thanks to the outstanding performance of Dominic Brogan, while the fourths completed a one-run victory thanks to a determined tailend effort by Matt Gillard, Daniel Brown and young Adam Wasyluk.
Adam is only 15 years of age and definitely a player of the future.
The seconds made light work of their run chase, requiring only another 40 runs to complete victory on Saturday morning.
Major highlight was the big hitting by skipper Andrew Yates, who peppered the Mosman neighbourhood with some of the biggest sixes seen in many years.
Yates said a recent dedication to fitness contributed to his efforts on Saturday.
“I was sick of huffing and puffing my way through every game, and thought that a bit of fitness work would not only add to my enjoyment but also improve my performance,” Yates said.
“The results are coming, and Saturday’s display of power hitting was the icing on the cake.
“I’ve also been doing some additional work-outs with the medium pace bowlers from Mosman’s fourth XI women’s team, which has been great for all of us.”
Yates and his second grade boys can be seen this Saturday at Allan Border Oval, but the major highlight of this weekend’s round is Sunday’s one-day final, with Mosman taking on Penrith.
If all goes to plan, Mosman will be putting some silverware on the shelf this Sunday night.
