Mosman Cricket Club is enjoying its most successful start to a season for many years.

Based on the Club Championship table, it is currently rated the second best Grade cricket club in Sydney.

Leading the charge is the Club’s first XI, which is currently six points clear at the top of the table after making mincemeat of Hawkesbury last weekend.

The team travelled to the Richmond on both days, but the long trip was made worthwhile when they completed a 10-point outright victory just after lunch on the second day.

The team was at full strength, with both Shane and Brett Lee making solid contributions.

Shane made some runs and took some wickets, while Brett also took a few wickets and generally intimidated most batsmen as he continued his preparation for this week’s First Test in Brisbane.

Skipper Martin Haywood continued his phenomenal run, with another half-century and he has now compiled nearly 500 runs this season.

Typically, he played down the fact that his appearance and contribution is equivalent to five men.

“Sure I’ve made a few runs this season but, when it is all boiled down, my role is no different to the pizza delivery boy who visits my place a few days a week,” he explained. “It is a case of delivering the goods when called upon, irrespective of the circumstances.”

Another highlight of the weekend was the second coming of aging speedster Warwick Adlam, who picked up seven wickets in what was a very fruitful weekend.

Captain Haywood was ecstatic with Adlam’s performance.

“The site of Warwick steaming in with the wind in his hairpiece was a sight to behold and one that I hope to see more of this season.”

Mosman’s second grade captain, Andrew Yates, played a lone hand with the ball in his team’s unfortunate defeat at the hands of Hawkesbury.

Yates took five wickets and, despite some solid support with the bat from Sammy Roberts and Ben Sullivan, the Hawks were just too good on the day.

Unfortunately, the Club’s third and fourth grade teams were defeated, but the ‘Baby Whales’, the fifth grade, restored some pride with a crushing victory.

They dismissed Hawkesbury for 102, with 15-year-old Adam Wasyluk taking four wickets. Adam’s good weekend continued when on Sunday he was named vice captain of Mosman’s Green Shield team.

The fifth grade side cruised to the win with the loss of just four wickets, putting them in equal third position.

This weekend the Mosman Second XI take on Fairfield at Allan Border Oval, with proceedings commencing at 11.00am.
