The Mosman first grade team celebrated the New Year with a convincing victory in a one-day match against local rivals Manly Warringah.
The victory ensured Mosman’s position in the finals of the one-day competition, and also consolidated the team’s position at the top of the overall table.
The star of the day was Brett Erickson, who has just returned from a successful stint with the NSW Under 19 team.
Brett picked up three wickets with his leg spinners and compiled a handy 60 runs with the bat.
Mosman skipper Martin Haywood was full of praise for his young charge.
“Brett has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few months,” Haywood said. “I believe most of his improvement can be attributed to the fact that he is now constantly surrounded by talented cricketing professionals.
“Not only is he now a member of the State’s cricketing elite but, locally, he has also picked up a few handy mentors, including Peter Philpott, Ian Finlay and Craig Hughes.”
Others to perform well in the Manly game included Herman Schliebs, Glen Davidson and local stalwart Cameron Guthrie.
Guthrie and the improving Warwick Adlam guided the team home over the last few overs.
The news wasn’t so good in second grade, with Manly giving the Whales a good pasting.
Skipper Andrew Yates was devastated, and described his team’s performance as one of the worst for the season.
“I think we were all guilty of over-celebrating during the traditional mid-season break,” Yates said. “Without exception, we performed like Christmas turkeys.”
Better results were achieved in third and fifth grade, with good victories ensuring both these teams are well in contention for a place in this season’s final series.
Fourth grade continued their wretched run of luck, and last season’s premiers are now looking more likely to finish in the bottom half of the table.
Overall, the club is still perched perilously close to the top of the Club Championship, with continuing good form in the Poidevin Gray and Green Shields boosting the Club’s chances of a glorious end to an eventful season.
