Whales cling to Club Championship hopes – 18 February 2002

Mosman Cricket Club remains hopeful of taking out this year’s Sydney Grade Cricket Club Championship despite an unsuccessful weekend for the Club’s First XI.

After a disappointing loss to Campbelltown on Saturday, the Whales’ first grade team travelled to Penrith on Sunday for the final of the one-day competition.

Hopes were high for the team’s first piece of silverware this season.

However, the game was all but over after the Whales were rolled for only 120 runs after electing to bat first.

Penrith made light work of the run chase and, deservedly, now hold the mantle of best one-day team in Sydney cricket.

A big contingent of Mosman supporters made the trek to Penrith and, despite the result, a good time was had by all, primarily due to the efforts of Andrew Yates who drove the bus and packed the picnic.

Mosman first XI skipper Martin Haywood was philosophical about the weekend’s results.

“Despite the perceived significance of Sunday’s one day final, I sincerely believe that the Club Championship and regular season premierships are of far more importance,” he said.

“Therefore, all teams across the club have bigger games ahead of them, with higher rewards at stake.

“We’ve currently got a few injuries and there were some courageous efforts over the weekend, particularly from big Glen Davidson who’s body was barely able to join the queue of players seeking a massage on Sunday evening,” Haywood said.

The second XI continued their charge towards a place in the finals with another great victory on Saturday. The stars were Luke Hodgkinson with 68 runs and Nat Hill with 4 wickets.

The thirds consolidated their spot at the top of the table with another great win. Dominic Brogan continued his extraordinary run of form and led the charge home with another four wickets.

The fourth XI are also coming home with a wet sail, and currently lie in predatory fashion just outside of the top six.  Nick Mundy belted 83 runs and Phil Nolan took three wickets in Saturday’s win over Penrith.

Unfortunately Dougal Bryant’s fifth XI were washed out and forced to spend the afternoon shopping with wives and girlfriends.

The Mosman first XI will be looking to get back on track this weekend at Allan Border Oval. They will take on Bankstown, with play commencing at 11.00am.
