My St George Cricket team to match St Kilda Cricket Club

Hamish Solomons | May 27, 2023

I have been inspired by the Legendary St Kilda Manager Tim “Clock” Loughry and his personal selections for the best St Kilda team. A great line up that would give some international teams a run for their money.

I thought I could come up with a St George DCC team that would create one of the all time great grade match ups. Here’s the St George team of my playing time.

1. Steve Cazzulino

Can’t go past the record holder for the most runs in a season with 1325. Also played first class cricket for Tasmania and if required could bat and get sledged all day.

2. Brett Van Deinsen

This spot was contested by 3 others, including an international but at his best, this guy was devastating. Premiership winning player with some 1st class games under his belt and would be more than handy for a few overs as well.

3. Graeme Rummans (Captain)

We are stealing him back from St Kilda for this game. Local junior so he’s coming back home. I’m sure he’s sick of the “best grade cricketer of all time” tag, but put simply, he is. When you win as many premierships as Rowdy, you get the big © next to your name.

4. Kurtis Patterson

If you currently average 144 for Australia you make the team.

5. Moises Henriques

I’m so confident with this team that I’ll probably only play Moises as a batsman despite being one of the best all-round cricketers I’ve laid eyes on. All boxes ticked, all class from an early age playing at Olds Parks through to getting the job done at Hurstville Oval.

6. Brad McNamara

Buzzard completes the balance of this team on and off the field. Absolute legend and one of the smartest and best competitors I’ve seen. Good enough to have played cricket for Australia, but it was the amazing Waugh era. Enough said.

7. Nathan Pilon

Put simply, the best gloveman I’ve seen. Simply amazing and a record holding batsman at the Saints to boot when in 02-03 he scored 1193 runs for the season.

8. Trent Copeland

Every team needs a back up wicket keeper!!! If you are in the top 4 wicket takers for NSW you make the team. More than capable of scoring a ton given his early credentials as Batsman-Keeper when he arrived from Bathurst. Come to think of it, he has scored a 1st class century. This team just keeps getting stronger.

9. Peter Wooden

Interesting selection but I’m going for balance here. I’m top heavy with pace bowlers and I want to be able to throw everything at the St Kilda line up. Woody was a premiership winning left arm spinner with some big runs under his belt. He is now one of Thailand’s premier cricketers so how could I not pick him.

10. Liam Zammit

Premiership winning captain at the Saints with some 1st class experience as a Leg Spinner. Now I’ve got two different spinners in my team and both have scored 1st grade centuries. This team needs a genuine bunny…

11. Josh Hazlewood

I know Clock left out one SK Warne as he only played a handful of games in his time for St Kilda. Similar situation here although we have seen Josh at the Saints for 36 games which easily makes the 35 game criteria that I conveniently just created. One of those was also a winning GF. If he’s busy playing cricket for Australia, Steve Green slides in with his 383 wickets and his 4 premierships.

I’ve left out some absolute guns with 1st class credentials but some of these guys may not have fit the balance for the selector or they might have made their name at another club. Tough school.

Clock’s Saints (St Kilda)         Vs                   Hamo’s Saints (St George)

1. Nick Jewell                                                 1. Steve Cazzulino

2. Shawn Craig                                              2. Brett Van Deinsen

3. Michael Klinger                                         3. Greame Rummans

4. Graeme Rummans                                    4. Kurtis Patterson

5. Rob Quiney                                               5. Moises Henriques

6. Tim O’Sullivan                                           6. Brad McNamara

7. Shaun Graf                                                7. Nathan Pilon

8. Damon Rowan                                           8. Trent Copeland

9. Glen Lalor                                                  9. Peter Wooden

10. Adrian Jones                                           10. Liam Zammit

11. Michael Beer                                           11. Josh Hazlewood

What a game it would be.
