question
Q: One of the most elegant Bulldogs to grace Memorial Oval was the very, very stylish Steve Smith. He debuted in John Bull’s Premiership winning third grade side at the tender age of 15. Bully attributes the greying of his hair to the frustrating attempts to get the youngster playing sensible cricket.

Steve would inevitably get a start but then throw his dig away after 20 or 30. He dreaded the clatter of the skipper and his spikes thundering down the grandstand at Punchbowl Oval after another dig was thrown away. Smith knew he was about to be the recipient of another blast from the frustrated skipper.

Steve Sydes and Mick Stephenson were part of the planning with Bull at the helm. In desperation Bull asked Stepho to have a word to the wayward youngster. Smith was told to pick up Stepho at Punchbowl station and the pair did indeed have a chat. It was stressed on the youngster that he was harming the team by not carrying on with the job. In most innings Mick said a couple of batsmen inevitably fail and it is up to those who get a start to build a big total.

That day Smith got 48

question
Q: Grahame Thomas had the honour of being the first Bankstown player to represent Australia in Test cricket. He was a magnificent hooker of the ball, loved the straight drive and was very speedy between the wickets.

Grahame formed a dynamic opening partnership with Bankstown Legend Dion Bourne and together they tore opposing bowlers apart. The scourge of fast bowlers and an absolute delight for spectators. Grahame also teamed with Alan Kelly for a record 246 run stand vs Paddington. Kelly sensibly turned the strike over to the rampaging Thomas who took full advantage.

One fine day at Memorial Oval Dion and Grahame hammered the Cumberland attack which contained a youthful Richie Benaud. Grahame pounded 143 that day and the leggie must have been impressed as years later he said that Thomas had played some of the most brilliant innings he had ever seen.

Q: Kevin Roberts joined Bankstown District Cricket Club at the age of 21 for the 1993/94 season after spending his junior and early grade career at Gordon District Cricket Club.

It was a brave decision for Kevin to join Bankstown as he'd been at the club since he was 6 years of age and had been on the club committee in the two years before joining the Bulldogs. He also was a valuable member of Gordon DCC 1989/90 and1990/91 first grade premiership winning teams.

question
Q: Brett Elliott is Bankstown District Cricket Club first grade player number 183 after making his first grade debut at the age of 21 and during an incredibly strong and successful era at Bankstown.

Very much a team-first player Brett was a top-order batsman and a handy off-spin bowler who won multiple premierships with the Bulldogs and went on to win a first grade premiership with the Balmain Tigers.

I’d probably categorise myself as a decent 1st Grade batsman who held my own in some very good company and did okay against some quality opposition over the years. Always put the team first and played wherever picked. Predominantly a top order batsman and generally opened in 1st Grade.

question
Q: Stuart Green played for Nepean/Penrith and Bankstown in Sydney Grade Cricket from 1975-76 to 1990-91. In eight seasons with Bankstown, he scored 2744 runs at 24.1 and took 93 wickets at about 24.75 with 46 catches mostly in second grade. With Penrith, Stuart captained both the Green Shield and Poidevin Gray teams.

Stuart is Bankstown first grade player number 152 and Penrith first grade player number 114.

Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?

The ultimate competitor was Geoff Spotswood. I was vice captain to him for years at Bankstown. Geoff took everything he did as a challenge for excellence and often played with the belligerence of a Rugby League front rower - I wonder why?

My best man, Tim Sullivan - a great competitor and highly skilled opening bowler. Always thinking about how to capitalise on the opponents’ weakness. I am sorry for running him out at Manly
