Bangladeshi international Jahanara Alam joins Sydney

Sydney Cricket Club | December 16, 2024

Bangladesh International, Jahanara Alam, joins the Sydney Cricket Club this weekend, direct from national duties with the Bangladesh T20 squad. Alam is the veteran of 52 international ODIs and 83 international T20s since 2011, most recently against Ireland in Bangladesh, and has played in two ICC T20 World Cups.

Alam, a quick bowler, will join Sydney’s 1st grade squad for her first game for her adopted club on Sunday against Bankstown at Bankstown Oval.

"I'm really honoured to come to Australia and play for Sydney CC. I'm looking forward to playing and meeting my new teammates this Sunday," she said.

Rod Chapman, SCG Cricket chair, said: “Jahanara brings wonderful international cricket experience to Sydney Cricket Club, and we will look to support her by creating cultural connections and partnerships within the community”.

“As we develop our club’s strategy beyond this year, we hope that Alam can support our vision supporting the next generation of players from the Inner West. This includes developing a partnership with Cricket NSW and Sydney Thunder through their South Asian Engagement Strategy”.

Sydney Cricket Club is looking to continue its onfield success this season, with Alam’s international experience adding to the club’s existing depth. She will also provide one-on-one mentoring to the emerging talent at the club.

Alam will also have the opportunity to share her cricket knowledge and skill by coaching and mentoring in the community.

The Sydney Cricket Club is very grateful for the time and efforts of both the Bangladesh Cricket Board and Cricket Australia to work through the process to realise this opportunity for Alam and the Sydney Cricket Club.

Gizelle Plummer, Sydney Cricket Club captain, welcomed Alam warmly.

“Cricket is a global game and having an international player like Jahanara Alam join the Sydney Cricket Club with her wealth of experience and knowledge is incredibly exciting for us. We have a wonderful and extremely talented young squad, so I’m looking forward to the guidance and mentoring she can provide to group, especially the seam bowlers,” she said.
