question
Q: Arriving at Drummoyne Oval on a humid, overcast morning with rain hanging in the air, there were some (the writer included) who were unsure that any cricket would be played at all – but in the end it was a humdinger that finished with the First Grade Bears singing the song for the first time since Round 3.

The umpires ambitiously targeted an on-time start (much to my surprise – the scorebook and team list were still in the car at 9.27 when I was told we were tossing at 9.30), which was kiboshed by rain at 9.29. When the coin eventually came down an hour later, Sydney won it and made the fastest call of “we’ll bowl” ever recorded. We got underway at 10.45, losing just a single over per side.

Q: UTS North Sydney made the trip out to Benson’s Lane across both Saturday and Sunday in early November.

It started off strong with skipper Mac Jenkins winning the toss and choosing to bat on a wicket that was thought to deteriorate as the game progressed.

After the 20 over mark both openers were s till at the crease, but departed shortly after the first drinks break. This brought to the crease both Addison Sherriff and Tim Reynolds, their partnership continued to grow and put the bears in a strong position just after lunch.

Q: From the Vault: 2020 PG Shield Preliminary Final vs Gordon

The baby Bears turned up to Chatswood Oval full of energy and keen to get on the field, while it appeared that their opposition were hoping for more rain.

The ground looked wet and the covers had accumulated plenty of water from overnight showers. This led to a delay in the start of proceedings. With the covers finally removed, the pitch looked hard and dry, but light rain threatened to derail our campaign and the covers were returned. Once the rain finally stopped (again), the umpires reduced the game to 44 overs per side and scheduled the start of play for 12:15. Gordon won the toss and elected to bat.

Q: UTS North Sydney had a mixed start across the lower grades to kick off 2024/25. Here are the match reports from the opening month of the season.

Third Grade
Round 1 vs Bankstown
First game of the year for the Bears, looking to kickstart our season with a win playing away at Kelso against a reasonably strong Bankstown side. After winning the toss and electing to field, the boys were fired up to start the year strong, well supported by 3rd-grade debutant Angus Miller and North Sydney debutant Lachlan Spencer. After a slow start in the opening overs, Lachlan Spencer (2-53) and Vrushab Kumar (3-46) broke open the important opening and middle-order partnerships. Yet, a few excellent innings and some clean hitting at the death took Bankstown to a formidable total of 300, a score well above par but not out of sight for some bears looking to score their first runs of the season.

Q: We arrived at North Sydney with ominous skies overhead and, before we could park the car, the heavens opened up and large raindrops threatened both the match and the Bears Community Day, featuring a bake sale for the Jane McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Day that had been planned.

The girls arrived running through the rain with cricket kit in one hand and cakes, chocolate-dipped strawberries, meringues and cookies etc in the other! Thankfully, after about 10 minutes, the rain stopped and the skies began to clear. Much to everyone's surprise the umpires advised they would be starting the game at the scheduled time provided we could get the covers off and the ground ready on time. At this point fathers descended from everywhere to lend a hand and 15 minutes later the ground was ready for the day's play.

Q: Nic Bills: My Greatest Grade XI

Nic Bills has had fantastic Grade Cricket career which still has plenty of tomorrows. Over 15 years, he’s been involved in some fierce battles. He’s racked up more than 500 wickets and lifted eight premiership trophies across all formats. North Sydney, Manly, Mosman, Sydney – he’s worn the colours of them all, adding a bit of his own history to each club along the way.

With all those experiences fresh in his memory, Bills now shares his best XI from the ranks of Sydney grade cricket – a team shaped by years of gritty competition.

Q: UTS North Sydney's James Moore has illustrated all the qualities of a top-class batsman early in his First Grade career. He hits the ball hard, has delicate hands, and is developing into a fantastic thinker when constructing innings. Pair that with his ability to keep wickets; the future is bright for the young man whose roots lie in Bankstown.

Behind the belligerent blade of Moorey is a fantastic team and club man who would go into the trenches for the ten blokes by his side. He runs the fines post-game, and it is fair to say that a career in law and order is probably not on the horizon. But one thing is for sure, he loves the game more than most.

He ended up living up – and surpassing – all of the accolades above during his season of Grade Cricket with the UTS North Sydney Bears and beyond.

“Getting awarded that contract was a dream come true and still hasn’t really sunk in. When I was told, my family stood outside the door, trying to listen to the phone call. The Bears finished 10th on the Club Championship last season, a solid result but disappointing after a strong start, with two grades missing out on finals on the final day of the regular season. Q: UTS North Sydney Cricket Club - September, October 2023 - Month 1 wrap

First Grade opened with a new-look T20 competition that brought a few new faces to the North Sydney First Grade squad, with 3 debuts. Everett Oxenham, Addison Sherriff and Hugh Sherriff became players 690, 691 and 692, respectively, for the club. Everett and Addison's debuts were also their first games in First Grade.

In a strange quirk to the new format, our first match, against last year's finalists, Sydney Uni, was played at Bensons Lane in Hawkesbury. After winning the toss and batting first, we only managed to post 7-119 off our 20 overs, with contributions from JA (Justin Avendano), Mac Jenkins and Maresy (Dylan Mares)to help us to the total. With a modest total on the board, we would need to be inch-perfect with the ball and almost were, with Sydney Uni passing our total 8 down with just 3 balls to spare. Debutant Everett was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-26 off his 4. Fellow spinner Mac was also miserly, taking 2-23 off his 4.

Q: Welcome back Nic Bills

A huge day for the UTS North Sydney Bears as we welcome Nic Bills back to the club as our First Grade skipper!
Nic needs no introduction, being one of the most successful players in NSW Premier Cricket, with 490 First Grade wickets to his name. The first 172 of these were for the Bears over five seasons after receiving cap number 615 in 2009-10, including in our Limited Overs Premiership-winning side in 2012-13, and he was a shoe-in when we selected our Team of the Decade in 2020.
Since leaving the Bears in 2014, Nic has played for Manly, Mosman and Sydney, winning a Club Championship and First Grade Premierships in all three formats. His 409 wickets for all clubs in the 2010s was the highest tally of all players and earned Nic a coveted spot in the Sydney Cricket Association Team of the Decade.
We're thrilled to see Nic return home to the Bears and can't wait to see what our First-Grade side achieves under his leadership.
