UTS North Sydney District Cricket Club | September 20, 2024

An interview with Kayla Robson - 2024 Women’s 2nd grade Player

Kayla Robson, wicketkeeper for our women’s second-grade premiership winning side, has not only excelled on the field but has also demonstrated incredible resilience and determination off it. Last season Kayla’s game developed in more ways than just her performance on the pitch, facing the setback of various injuries, adapting to a new role amongst a skilled group of women and the growth of her game awareness, Kayla was a key piece to the success of our Women’s Second Grade side. We’re excited to delve into Kayla's story and hear first-hand how she has managed to balance the highs of her sporting career so far with the trials she has faced.

Q : Describe the moment you first fell in love with Cricket and what drew you to it?

KAYLA : “I grew up surrounded by Cricket, seeing my older brother play made me eager to learn the game and I ended up loving it and have stuck with it since.”

Q : How do you balance your Cricket with your personal life and responsibilities?

KAYLA : “Training and playing every week is something I really look forward to, playing Cricket allows me to direct my focus from school and work which I think is really important, I find that playing cricket allows me to have that healthy balance.”

Q: What has been the most challenging obstacle you have faced in your sporting career so far and how did you overcome it?

KAYLA : “Funnily enough I feel as though Cricket is a game of continuous ups and downs, for me personally the mental game was definitely something I had to adapt to - many will say Cricket is a mental game and I completely agree, I’m constantly working on the mental side of my game that I believe will help me in performing at a higher level and in high pressure situations.

Q: Is there one moment from last season that you consider your most memorable highlight?

KAYLA : “Definitely experiencing the atmosphere at Chatswood Oval when we won the premiership, for my first year in second grade it will probably be the highlight of my sporting life for the next few years to come, going to take a lot to top that moment of celebration with the girls!”

Q: What is one thing that we will find in your game-day lunch box?

KAYLA : “It became a running joke last season for my teammates to already know what I had in my lunch box every week because I’m quite predictable but there's two things I have every week without question and that is a Woolworths Choc chip muffin and a purple Powerade.”

Q: Have there been any life lessons or values that you’ve learnt from Cricket that you apply to everyday life?

KAYLA : “I really like the saying ‘If it is to be it’s up to me’ not only do I find this important for my cricket but in a general sense it means I need to work hard for something it’s not just going to be handed to me, and in relation to that I’ve learnt that sometime you need to be out of control and that’s okay.”

Q. Finally, what goals have you set for yourself this season

KAYLA : “This season I want to work on establishing myself as a confident top 6 bat, focusing on my strengths with my batting and allowing my skills to adapt to the changing nature of our team. As well as this improve my wicketkeeping skills with a focus on agility and handling pressure when up to the stumps.”

With a strong focus on developing her game headed into her second season of Women’s grade cricket with the Bears, we are super excited to see what this season has in store for Kayla!
