Q: Shane Watson is Redlands Tigers player no 573, Australian Test Player no 391 and Australia's 44 Test Captain
In November 2020 one of the highest profile Redlands Tigers players of all time announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Before we had Marnus to cheer for on the international stage, we had Watto. And before him you had to look a long way back to find our last Test player.
Shane came to the club (then known as Easts-Redlands) as a fresh faced teenager in the 1997/98 season from Ipswich and immediately made an impression with his hard hitting yet technically correct batting and ability to bowl at good pace.

question
Q: Tigers Tales - 1st Grade Captain Craig Cullen 'Cap 620'
The latest in our series on Easts/Redlands first grade captains comes from some pretty famous cricketing blood in the Redlands. Craig Cullen had a career spanning every grade in the club between the late 1990s and early 2010s, with a record that includes a club Best & Fairest award and the second fastest club 100 (off 46 balls) behind Razz Bubke. This mild mannered school teacher developed a reputation as a big hitter and gun fieldsman who went very close to higher honours. After he led our top team during the 2011-12-13 seasons he moved north with work and began a successful stint with Emerald Brothers Cricket Club.

Q: Ian Stenhouse grew up in Rockhampton and despite being just over 600 kilometres from Brisbane was identified as a very talented young cricketer. His talent and performances were rewarded with selection in Queensland under age teams from 11 through to the Australian Under 19s at the age of 17.
Cricket took Ian around the world at a very young age and its been quite the journey
Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?
Scott Prestwidge had so much skill. Bat Ball and fielding. He was outstanding. Loved a bit of biff as well!!
Loved having Craig Jesberg in the team as well. All round skill and always up for a fight! Loved the dogs at the Gabba on a Thursday night!

Q: The latest instalment in our first grade captain’s series is a cricketing journeyman who was earmarked for big things from a young age. Alex Kemp announced himself on the club scene in his Taverners year with a huge season including a double ton. From there he steadily rose through the grades with buckets of runs at both club and representative level.
Tell me about some of the clubs and rep teams you’ve played with.
I played for BEARS Junior Cricket and went through the various QLD underage teams as a kid (U15-U19’s). I played all my grade cricket in Brisbane for Redlands before moving to Sydney to play with Randwick Petersham Cricket Club. I was also lucky enough to be a part of the Bulls squad for 5 years.

Q: Evan Bancroft, known to all as ‘Banger’ is a passionate Tigers man.
Starting out with Easts as a 17 year and still playing over 40’s cricket, Banger has such an infectious personality he brings a smile to all.
He can talk, in fact he does it professionally as an MC and he shares some great tales as we look back at his journey playing the game.
I was 27 years and we played Sandgate. It was a great thrill as I never thought I would get the chance to play first grade. I took 2 wickets and scored 23 not out batting 11.

Q: The Tigers history is a long, rich and varied one which we value greatly. This edition of the Tigers Captains series steps back in time to a very different era of the club.
Mal “Rowdy” Freeman led our top team during a very successful period when the club had a different name, home ground, logo and colours to the ones we are known by in the present.
If you look closely you can still see plenty of traces of the old days around our club today.

Q: Redlands Tigers Cricket Tales - One Fine Day in 1999
Two former Easts/Redlands players share their recollections about the team that won the One Day premiership against University of Queensland in 1998/99.
Paul Stenhouse (first-grade cap #497)
A great mix of experience and youth on that side and some seriously good players. I think six guys played first-class cricket with two representing Australia.
This was the first trophy in the top grade for Easts-Redlands. It was very special because I was a member of the 1989-90 First Grade premiership side, which was the last trophy for Easts top grade before the merger.
