Q: An interesting exercise is to troll back into the Club’s past and randomly select a few matches to provide current players and members with a glimpse into what has gone by in the past:

1983/84 First Grade v. Sutherland at Caringbah Oval – Parramatta enjoyed an overwhelming outright victory over a shell-shocked ‘Shire Team’ – Parramatta started proceedings with a rousing total of 326 that was built on the aggressive batting efforts of Kenny Gentles 93, John Affleck 75, Mark Sargent 53, and former State player Len Richardson 30.

question
Q: Parramatta District Cricket Club – Bowlers who’ve captured 10 wickets in an innings

The bowlers’ nirvana is to capture all ten of an opponent’s wickets in a single innings of a match. Throughout its long history the Parramatta District Cricket Club has had three bowlers perform this wonderful and rare feat.

The first Parramatta bowler to dismiss all ten was the highly regarded colonial era fast bowler Percy Maybury who routed the Arundell Cricket Club in the 1883/84 season when he snared 10 / 21 (all clean bowled). In 1884 Maybury also starred for Parramatta in a match against the touring England International team claiming an impressive 9 / 81 in the visitors first innings.

In the 1943/44 season former Test and Victorian all-rounder Morrie Sievers, who was stationed in Sydney during World War II, grabbed 10 / 42 versus Western Suburbs – which remains the best bowling performance in the NSW Premier Cricket 1st Grade competition since its inception in 1893/94. In fact, only two other bowlers have taken ten wickets in an innings in the First Grade competition – Balmain’s Bill Hunt 10 / 55 in 1930/31 and Waverley’s Vic Jackson 10 / 78 in 1937/38.

Hard working medium-paced swing bowler Scott Philipson added this deed to his portfolio in a NSW Premier Cricket Third Grade match at Merrylands Oval against Macquarie University during the 1984/85 season. Scott seized a useful 10 / 43.

question
Q: Albert ‘Bert’ Alderson, who in his playing days was an outstandingly productive left-handed batsman for both the Parramatta District Cricket Club and the Sydney University Cricket Club, on Saturday 14th December 2024 celebrates his 100th birthday – thus becoming the fourth former Parramatta player to reach that milestone, the others were Jack Anthony, Bill Smith and Alan Cramond.

Bert Alderson was literally a run machine – one of only a handful of batsmen to top 14,000 runs in grade cricket – of which 10,731 were made in 1st Grade with Central Cumberland and Sydney University.

Q: The Parramatta District Cricket Club has had many accomplished sportsmen pass through its ranks over the course of time, but the multitalented Charlie Leabeater – elder sibling of former State batsman Len Leabeater – takes a bit of beating.

He was adept at a wide range of sports as illustrated:

· As a cricketer he played for Central Cumberland from 1918/19 to 1944/45, this included three years in retirement, but as a veteran he answered call to overcome player shortages during World War II.

Q: Throughout its long history the Parramatta District Cricket Club has had a multitude of intriguing tales to tell, and the story of Tom Vernon Garrett certainly fits that classification.

Between 1904 and 1911 Tom, a busy all-rounder (right-hand middle order batsman and medium-pace bowler), took the field for the Parramatta club (then known as Central Cumberland), in both First and Second grade – some of his playing contemporaries were club legends like Les Pye, ‘Mudgee Cranney’, E.L. ‘Gar’ Waddy, and internationals W.P. Howell and G. Hazlitt.

Q: The Parramatta District Cricket Club has a highly unique tradition regarding the stability of its 1st Grade Scorers that few if any other Cricket Clubs across the globe could match. Incredibly since 1918 only three people have undertaken the important role of permanent Scorer for the club’s 1st Grade team up to 2020. - Ernie Gould, Wesley Gould and Christine Bennison. What an unmatchable record over a time span of 102 years these three individuals have indeed proved to be ‘Pen Pushers Extraordinaire’, only occasionally missing Parramatta or Central Cumberland 1st grade matches through personal illness or because they were engaged in scoring a first-class or international match, year in year out they proudly took their places in the ‘Scorer’s Chair’.

Q: Greg Davidson played first grade cricket for Parramatta from 1989 to 2008. Highly respected by his team mates and those in opposition Greg took 333 wickets at an average of 27.45. His best figures in first grade was 6 for 57.

Upon retirement Greg ventured into umpiring and is now a first-class umpire and one of 12 that form part of Cricket Australia National Panel.

Who’s been the biggest influence in your cricket career?

Apart from my parents, I had 3 coaches in Ron Dunn, Eric Myatt and Max Crittenden growing up who taught me the fundamentals of the game and how to win and lose gracefully. Later in life Bob Simpson, Ron Wright, Michael Hair, Darren Goodger and Simon Taufel have been instrumental in my development and progress as player, umpire and human being.

question
Q: Alex Murphy made his first grade debut for Parramatta District Cricket Club during the 1999/2000 NSW Premier Cricket season.

Alex is Parramatta First grade player number 523.

Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?

Daniel Jackson enormous heart and a willingness to play injured. Was still playing 1st grade for Parramatta in his mid 40’s and causing plenty of trouble for opposing batsmen.

Nick Bertus - has been a big part of turning Parramatta District Cricket Club into a competitive force. One of the best batsmen in the competition for at least the last 6 years and has won many games off his own bat. question
Q: On Tuesday 7th November 2023, former Parramatta District Cricket Club 1st grade player and Life Member John Aitken passed away.

The old phrase ‘cricket is life’, was most apt when applied to ‘JA’, he conducted a life-long love affair with the game. The remarkable duration of his personal playing career would undoubtedly place him amongst Australia’s longest-ever continuous players. Up to the close of the 2012/13 season he was still captaining and playing in the Auburn Shire Club’s 4th grade team. Still maintaining his enthusiasm after an astonishing seven decades playing the grand old game.

John was physically a diminutive, slight man whose cricket could be best summed up as ‘gritty and determined.’ Not blessed with the natural ability of his younger sibling Bobby, he practiced assiduously and utilised sheer hard work to extract ‘every ounce’ of skill he owned to forge his marathon career.

question
Q: Allen Turrell made his first grade debut for Cumberland, now Parramatta at the age of 18 in 1973. Guess who was at first slip when he took up his position behind the stumps?

All up Allen took 633 dismissals across the Grades at Parramatta, 340 in First Grade including 280 catches and 60 stumping’s.

What was your favourite stumping?

More memorable to me, I always enjoy (now, not at the time) reflecting on my favourite missed stumping’s, those of two Test captains, Bob Simpson and Mike Gatting, both off RA as well. No wonder I got so many death stares! They both got big hundreds to make it worse. I reckon I was too busy focusing on their brilliant batting than doing the only thing I had to do, watch the bloody ball!
