Vale Ian Monaghan 24 August 1956 - 19 October 2023

Parramatta District Cricket Club | October 23, 2023

Gone way too soon the Gentle Giant, The Big Fella, Mountain Man or Tarz, Ian was a great man.

A 6'5" blonde headed fast bowler with a superb outswinger and nasty bouncer, and prolific six hitter, the big fella was a fantastic team man at Cumberland for 8 seasons then Penrith another 7.

In his first season, raced from 5ths to 2nds in a stellar debut year. He took over 300 wickets for CUMBOs in all forms, then another 137 at Penrith and opened the bowling in the Panthers 1982/83 Premiership team.

Ian continued as administrator at Penrith using his engineering experience on grounds committee and assisted establish the first "Captain's Luncheon" for the Panthers. He was an invaluable member of the Richie Benaud Oval redevelopment team which will soon bear fruit.

With Brett and Luke, he played, coached, and administered his local cricket and soccer clubs in the lower mountains where he lived at Glenbrook.

More than all that, Ian was a great brother to Brenda, Greg, Richard and Tony, a wonderful family man, husband to Lynette, father to Brett, Ali and Luke, and Da to Taran, Amelia and Eleanor.

Ian will be sadly missed by all of his family, by his many friends and teammates in the cricket world especially at CUMBOs and Penrith.

Vale Ian Monaghan

The Penrith Cricket Club community sends our heartfelt condolences to the Monaghan family for the recent loss of their beloved Ian. "Tarzan" as he was known around the traps of Howell Oval, was a giant of a man but with a gentle heart. A 6"5' bristling blonde fast bowler who thundered into the crease, hit the pitch hard and troubled many a batsman with his steepling bounce. Tarzan played with the Summer Cats through the 80's and was an integral part of the 1982/83 First Grade Premiership winning team. He then worked with the club for many years afterwards, using his wonderful engineering skills to bring vast improvements to Howell Oval, including our training nets system, boundary fence upgrades and many other things our current day players can be thankful for.

Today, our club, through the kind words of Ian's dear friend and PCC Life Member, Ray Hudswell, paid their respects to remember Ian and the wonderful service and contribution he made to our club and the Penrith cricket community.

Rest peacefully Tarzan.
