A History of Lance Hutchinson Oval and Bexley Oval
Georges River District Cricket Club | June 19, 2023
A club's home ground is its fortress and the heart and soul of the club. Georges River is blessed to have among the best home grounds in the Sydney Shires competition and indeed the Greater Sydney Region. If the twin grounds of Lance Hutchinson and Bland Ovals at Riverwood are our club's heart, the our ground at Bexley Oval is certainly its soul.
Every ground has a great story - we hope you enjoy the back stories to our beloved grounds.
Lance Hutchinson Oval
Lance Hutchinson was a significant figure among the Canterbury community for many decades and the oval is rightly named after him. Prior to that he was a very keen cricketer and administrator making his name in that respect in its own right.
Our history of Lance Hutchinson commences in the early 1940s with Lance's cricketing exploits, through to the challenges of the second world war, to brighter days from the 1950s to today, with Hutcho being on the world stage with the Over 50s World Cup in 2018.

Bexley Oval
Our history of Bexley Oval starts in the early 1800s with parcels in of land in Bexley mapped out and passed from person to person before being established by the Preddey family. It is thanks to the Preddey family, particularly the work of the 'Grand Old Dame of Bexley' at the turn of the century that we have what we know and love as Bexley Oval today.
From horses and recalcitrant sheep maintaining the ground, to the dark shadow cast by WWII and the subsequent post WWII celebrations, grand re-openings and ex-Georges River boys returning to Bexley being a part of the Australian side for the Over 50s World Cup, we hope you enjoy the history of our Bexley Oval here: https://bit.ly/GR-Bexley-Oval.
