Seagulls Women's Cricket - Making the Grade in 23-24
Stockton and Northern Districts Cricket Club | September 21, 2024
The Women's cricket program at Stockton & Northern Districts Cricket Club continues to go from strength to strength.
Starting out as a Friday evening social event and progressing to our first ever competitive team in 202-23 and narrowly missing a place in the final of the Plate competition, Women’s team was promoted to the Cup competition for 2023-24 season. In what was a very unbalanced but tough competition, the team performed remarkably well and coming into the last round had an excellent chance of making the semifinals. However, a washout killed that possibility.
Benefiting from the previous seasons experience we saw some very impressive performances from several players this year. Fallon Burton, a young left arm fast bowler was the leading wicket taker and very energetic in the field. She and her sister Lacey bring a lot of value to our team and we can’t thank their parents enough for the support they give to their girls and to our team. Two of our most experienced players had excellent seasons. Taylah Walton was our player of the year, with consistent performances all season with both bat and ball. She was also our most enthusiastic trainer. Jess Delahunty was our leading run scorer despite what was a slightly truncated season for her due to a shoulder injury. This prevented her from doing her usual amount of bowling. Our most improved player was Rochelle Crawford, who showed the value of enthusiasm and hard training. The improvement in her bowling was impressive. We had several new players this year who showed talent which, with the experience gained, will lead to better things for them and the team in the future. The team is a delight for Rob Matthews and me to work with. They enjoy their cricket, hold their heads high and always give 100% on the field no matter the match situation. We appreciate Jemma Astley’s role in coaching, team selection and communication again this year.
The club aims to continue to grow the women's program and hopes to move to a second women's team in the near future.
