question
Q: UQ Cricket Club players to face toughest test on tour of India

For University of Queensland Cricket Club (UQCC) batsman Finn Churchward, the memory of Maxwell’s heroics against Afghanistan – and the 106 runs he plundered off just 44 balls against the Netherlands earlier in the tournament – will stay with him forever.

“I know there’s probably a bit of recency bias there, but I won't forget that World Cup in a hurry,” the second-year Bachelor of Mathematics / Bachelor of Sciences student said.

“It was an exciting tournament, and I watched all the games live on my computer. To come out on top in that final against India was amazing.”

Churchward will get a chance to follow in his heroes’ footsteps this year when he joins 14 of his clubmates on a UQCC tour of India – the club’s first international tour in 3 decades.

question
Q: Uni Bookworms with Martin Love

Alumni Edition 7 - August 2013

One of UQ’s favourite sons is no doubt Martin Love. His balance at the crease made him one of the truly great batsmen to watch. What better person to provide this edition’s Uni bookworms 20 questions?

Your first memory of UQCC?

My first memory was WEP coming up to Toowoomba Grammar School to talk to me when I was in Grade 12, prior to me playing the Metway Cup preseason competition as the country player for Uni. I remember walking away after that conversation hoping not everyone at the club was like WEP.

question
Q: Michael Philipson won the Peter Burge Medal awarded to the best player in the competition in 2016/17 season.

Michael played 4 first class games for Queensland and took 7 wickets in just his second match.

Still tormenting Premier Cricket attacks Michael hands are as good as anyone’s with the ability to play very late and the audacity to run down the wicket against the quicks. He was also a skillful medium pacer with a great slower ball who turned himself into a quality off-spinner.

question
Q: Harry Walker follows a long line of outstanding University wicket keeping batters. Lew Cooper, Wade Seccombe and Chris Hartley all played first class cricket for Queensland.

Harry has come through the Queensland under age teams and represented Queensland Under 19s at the National Championships in 2019/20.

Who are the two players you’ve come to admire most in your club in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

Angus Lovell seems to keep getting better each year and is someone who I love watching bat, starting with back-to-back centuries in the one day comp. Max Clayton's skills are second to none however, his work ethic and commitment at training is something I admire.

question
Q: Craig Phillipson burst onto the first class cricket scene in Australia with a century on debut and played 29 first class games and 57 one day games for Queensland.

He won the Peter Burge medal for the best player in the Queensland Premier Cricket in 2009/09. Craig was a wonderful shot maker with one of the best “leaves” in the game and was dismissive of attacks at his best. A quality gripper, underrated medium pacer and with a sharp cricketing mind, he was as good as it got at Grade level.

What was your highest score in senior cricket?

I made 240 not out in a 2nd X1 game for QLD off about 200 balls. Chased down 400 plus in the 4th innings vs Victoria at AB field.

question
Q: UQCC players have the distinction of most runs, most wickets and most dismissals for Queensland (Martin Love, Michael Kasprowicz and Wade Seccombe respectively). In this edition of Uni Bookworms we hear from Chuck Seccombe, one of legendary wicketkeepers that Uni have produced!

Your first memory of UQCC?

Turning up to my very first training session and before I got out of the car I could hear WEP barking directions at the nets!

Your best Uni cricket memory?

Hard to nominate just one. Probably the end of season trips to Byron are up there along with the celebrations that followed our first grade win back in 92–93.
