Raw footage of NSW Cricketers and Warren Saunders on a Jack Chegwyn Tour in 1962

John Rogers | March 17, 2023

With courtesy to Bob Watson – son of Billy Watson who played Test Cricket for Australia and was the St George District cricket Club opening batting partner for many years with Warren Saunders.

This raw film (we’re not sure if it’s been published before) was taken on a Jack Chegwyn Cricket Tour to Quirindi in Northern NSW in 1962. The film contains several of NSW cricketers and their wives.

Warren Saunders affectionally known as Mr St George passed away on 1 March 2023 and can be seen in the film batting and then walking to the camera.

The film

  • The first shot is of the famous actor Chips Rafferty chatting to Alan Davidson’s wife Betty and Billy Watson’s wife Nell.
  • The first action shot is of Alan Davidson - what a lovely swing of the bat
  • Then Warren Saunders batting, and walking to the camera.
  • The next close-ups are of Gammi Goonasena and Frank Misson with his wife Carole, plus two other ladies I can’t identify
  • Then Bob Simpson and his wife Meg
  • Then Grahame Thomas, Ian Craig, Frank Misson and Doug Ford.

Wow, that's so good and wonderful to see Warren and his NSW team mates having fun in country NSW. Thanks so much John for sharing 👍🏏❤️
