Can One Conversation Make a Difference
Jody Martins | November 23, 2023
A few stories… nameless… client confidentiality.
Cricketer gets in touch… we last spoke a year ago. He is struggling….
Lacks that feel-good confidence.
We talk.
Once…
and there is a shift…
but not enough yet.
We talk again…
Bang 75…
Bang 115.
She says quietly coach I need to talk to you about that doubt stuff you mentioned…
She just failed miserably today.
We meet for 50 minutes…
Talk about many things…
Life and her cricket…
Next day…
Bang 21 off 17…
Pull for six, down the track to an international bowler and hits her for 4 over her head.
Gets out…
Walks off the field with the biggest smile I have seen on her.
It’s a start.
He gets in touch with me from the other side of the world…
We start a program…
6 conversations…
We unpack his performances with bat and ball…
Bang runs…
Bang wickets…
She reached out about her son… 13 years old…
He joins an online course… that includes six conversations…
They do the daily work…
He learns…
Asks…
It takes a while to figure some things out…
Two weeks after the course…
Processes in place…
Bang 38…
Bang 62…
Sometimes one conversation makes a difference, and sometimes a few bring greater understanding and clarity. These might all be examples of cricket… and batting. However, the principles stay the same.
What matters is…
They all reached out independently to explore and tap into a part of themselves to bring about performance change. Some had problems to overcome… some had to learn new things… some had to step up.
All improved performance.
