Meet Adam Webber - Bathurst District Cricket Association

Bathurst and Orange Inter District Cricket - BOIDC | April 11, 2023

As Bathurst-Orange competition has been reinvigorated, we sat down with past players that competed in the Bathurst Orange Inter District Competition.

Our guest today was former Centennials All-Rounder Adam Webber. Adam was a part of the dominant Centennials team of the 1990s.

Hope you enjoy:

Who was the best individual opponent you played against?

Tough question because every team had a couple of really excellent players. Kirk Yates from St Pats, Paul Toole from Rugby Union, Craig Howard and Bruce Webb from ORC, Paul Clancy from City Colts just to name a few.

Did that opponent ever “give you nightmares”?

No nightmares, but you knew if you gave them a chance they could win the game on their own

The strongest opposition side that sticks out in your memory?

I think St Pats were the strongest opposition team when I started playing first grade in 1989, while towards the end of my stint with Centennials, Oberon and Cavaliers were both very hard to beat.

Similar to the above question, was there a particular team you played against that you thought “No! Not them!” and what was it about them that made you dread taking them on?

Probably Cavaliers because they had batsman who could score big scores quickly. If they got away then it was very hard to stop them.

Who was the best player you played with?

Kevin Geyer for sure. He was the most gifted batsman I played with and an excellent leg spin bowler as well. Being a representative squash player he was also very athletic in the field. Wonderful player and a top bloke as well.

What was the thing you remember most about the BOIDC?

I remember how good some of the batsman and bowlers were in Orange. They had two fast bowlers, Michael Hillier and Glen Hooper who on their day they could rip through any team in the competition. They also had some high quality batsman such Craig Evers who played for Cavaliers. He always scored runs against us and was also very attacking.

What would you say was the best side you played in? Can be either from a particular season, or across a period of time.

The Centennials side of the early 1990s was the best side I ever played with. I think it was a better side than the 1st grade district teams I played in. Of course we’ll never know but that’s how confident we felt

Did you win any premierships?

We lost the grand final in 1989-90, won the premiership in 1990-91, 1991-92, 1993-94 and 1994-95. I was also lucky enough to win 2 premierships with St Pats Old Boys in 2014-15 (2nd grade) and 2015-16 (Presidents Cup)

Centennials 1994-95 Premiers

What’s your most treasured moment in the teams you played for?

Friends! Premierships! Fun times!

What was your proudest achievement?

Getting picked as a batsman in first grade when I was 18. Previously I was playing 3rd grade with my school mates and got the call up at the start of the season. I found it to be pretty tough for most of the year but I was still proud to have made it.

Another proud moment was 1993-94 when we went through the season undefeated. As the season progressed we put more and more pressure on ourselves to do it. We were even sledging our own players to get the best out of them. It was a great season.

What was your worst on-field memory, either individual, or team?

I remember we were playing a final of some type against ORC and it had come down to the last ball.

Bernie Auld the ORC wicket keeper was batting and they needed 3 runs to win and we only needed 1 wicket. Bernie went for a big drive but only managed to sky it to me at mid-off. It was a sitter, I only had to move forward slightly but it still managed to slip through my hands. Worse still, the ball hit me right on the end of the knee and rolled about 10 metres away. It took me so long to finally get the ball in they easily ran two. The game ended in a tie and I wanted the earth to swallow me up. The worse thing was I could see the disappointment on the other guys faces. I’ve never forgotten that.
