Q: Carey stumps Bairstow and the Spirit of Cricket

In almost every game of cricket at any level around the world, you will see a wicket keeper standing back to the fast and medium pace bowlers. At some stage during an innings, the wicket keeper will take the ball the batter either let's go or misses and, in the same motion under arm it back towards the stumps in the hope the batter is out of their crease.

It's been happening since the game began and every wicket keeper, including all our favourite test keepers, have done it at some stage.

Why now, when Alex Carey, in the same motion, does it in a test match for Australia against England and Jonny Bairstow strangely walks out of his crease and is run out are some people so upset and screaming from the rooftops?

A: I don’t think Carey did anything wrong, I don’t think Cummins did anything wrong. I think Bairstow was #careless (just like his keeping) and I also think B-road was a complete hypocrite telling Cummins and Carey what he thought on the field: Inremember him not walking having smacked it to the keeper in an Ashes series years ago.
I am a massive advocate of protecting the Spirit of Cricket especially embedding this with junior cricketers as there is far too much crass talk on cricket fields these days.
However in this match, in this moment even as an England supporter I don’t think this relevant.

Q: How often should a junior (let’s say 11-14) practice their skills during the week?
A: How much do they want to work on developing their skills as opposed to having some fun, being curious about their game and enjoying each other’s company?
answered
Q: What's the best advice you've received in relation to cricket?
A: Stay in the moment and remember that most of the game is “above the shoulders” by which I mean adopting the right mindset!

Q: My kids love heading to the nets in school holidays but often don’t have any adults with them to direct what they’re working on.
Does anyone have any advice on what drills they could do at the nets to keep them interested and engaged whilst also improving their skills?
Batting, bowling and catching all need help!
Thanks in advance
A: There are loads of resources online and via You Tube etc that the kids can look into but the most important thing for them is to have some fun and enjoy exploring things in an unstructured way ie self directed learning!

Q: What's the ideal dynamic between a captain and a coach in club cricket?
A: Some brilliant responses already.
I would like to add that as coach your role is to support the captain in how he wants to go about leading the side. This could be as simple as listening and understanding his approach or challenging and questioning him to seek improvement. It is the captain’s team and therefore your role as coach is to be a facilitator in support of this

Q: We have a promising 17-year-old batter at our club and we’ve noticed he’s picking the bat up towards leg slip as the bowler is running into bowl. What’s the best way to help and is there a preference to how he should pick the bat up?
A: Some great suggestions already shared. My suggestion would be to show him what this looks like before and at impact and ask a couple of questions of him as to where he is strong and where he could develop his hitting area with this back lift.
Perhaps you could ask him to keep his hands close to his body and tuck his right elbow into his right hip (assuming he is a right handed batter)

Q: What is the most surreal moment you've experienced in cricket?
A: Many examples of surreal experiences connected to cricket the most recent of which was witnessing three run out dismissals in a University First Team game all off no balls.
