Cricket2Nurture in Uganda needs your help

Lennox Mugumira | May 17, 2023

In August 2020, Tim and I would go out onto the cricket pitch and work on our cricket skills in preparation for the upcoming games.

As we were hitting balls a number of kids joined in to help return the balls and were so eager to know more about what we were doing.

Tim and I started to learn more about cricket at the age of 14 or 15 and these kids were much younger. We reflected on how much time it took us to develop our talents that bring us so much joy and how we can’t go a day without talking about cricket.

We started to provide coaching sessions 3 days a week and apply the coaching tips we received from mini cricket.

This was in Nakanyonyi, Jinja, Uganda. We had to improvise by using bricks as stumps and sticks to especially teach how to grip the bat.

We later extended our programmes to the communities of Mafubira , Mpumudde Child Development Centre, Budondo, Buwekula and Kivubuka all in Jinja Uganda.

We have currently spread the game to over 400 kids in our communities and have managed to organize community games for the development of all the hubs.

We were fortunate on one occasion to receive some cricket equipment Uganda Cricket Association through our regional development officer in 2021. Sadly, the equipment could not sustain our programmes and we are currently out of equipment due to its scarcity here in Uganda.

The major aims of the project are to promote talent awareness in the field of cricket, provide equipment to the less fortunate cricketing communities, coach responsible cricketers and as well use cricket as a means of creating positive impact on society.

Our goal is to spread our programmes to all communities in Eastern region and later to the whole Uganda, especially in schools.

If any on the cricketing nations or cricket stores would like to help us with cricket equipment, we’d be so appreciative. You can contact Lennox Mugumira on email - lennomugumira12@gmail.com or Cricket2Nurture email - crickettonurture@gmail.com
