The LBW Trust Hosts "Behind the Mike | Celebrating Mike Coward AM"

LBW Trust | July 18, 2024

From writing about Bradman to Chappell to Warne, Mike Coward has been Australia’s Cricket scribe through the eras.

The LBW Trust is thrilled to announce its premier Sydney event for the year, "Behind the Mike | Celebrating Mike Coward AM," to be held at the State Library of NSW.

This special evening will honour the illustrious career of Mike Coward, the respected cricket journalist, author, interviewer and co-founder of The LBW Trust, Learning for a Better World.

Mike Coward's contributions to cricket journalism are unparalleled. With over four decades of dedicated reporting, he has captured some of the most significant moments in cricket history, bringing the game's stories and personalities to life with his eloquent and insightful writing.

Mike’s career began in Adelaide 61 years ago and continued in Melbourne, London and Sydney. He covered cricket for The Age, Melbourne and was senior cricket writer for The Advertiser, Adelaide and the Sydney Morning Herald before a nearly 20-year stint as a freelancer and cricket columnist for The Australian. Indeed, as a copyboy in Adelaide, he took the first edition of The

Australian off the truck in July 1964.

From meeting Ian Chappell at a deserted Adelaide race track to learn more about the World Series Cricket schism, to interviewing Dennis Lillee from the side of his bath at the Waldorf Hotel in London, and Viv Richards at the side of his bed at the Boulevard Hotel in Sydney, Mike Coward has seen it all. He travelled throughout Australia and the world to cover the Australian Cricket

team, bringing his readers closer to the heart of the game.

Parallel to his journalism career and inspired by his cricket travels, in 2006, Mike co-founded The LBW Trust, an organisation committed to transforming the lives of young people in cricket-playing developing nations through education.

His long-standing service on the Board has been instrumental in steering the Trust's mission of Learning for a Better World. In Mike’s words, "Sport has been generous to me, very generous, and so has its people, Its players, its administrators, those who are passionate about it.”
