Congratulations to Manly Warringah District Cricket for winning the Club Championship in both the Men’s and Women’s NSW Premier Cricket 2023-24 season. A terrific effort by all involved on and off the field.

To win the men’s club championship by 232 is quite incredible.

The points awarded for the Club Championships are a multiple of the points gained from each game in all 5 grades plus the Poidevin Gray and Green Shield games.

First Grade – the points from each game multiplied by 6.
Second Grade – multiplied by 5.
Third Grade – multiplied by 4.
Fouth Grade – multiplied by 3.
Fifth Grade – multiplied by 2.
Poidevin Gray – multiplied by 4.
Green Shield – multiplied by 2.

As you can see the higher grades receive more points, so I wanted to dig a little deeper to establish how dominate Manly have been across the 5 grades in the preliminary rounds of the 2023-24.

In the 5 Grades, not including the First Grade T20, Poidevin Gray and Green Shield competitions, Manly have played 79 games and won 60 with a winning percentage of 75.9%.

The next best is St George District Cricket club winning 54 games with a winning percentage of 68.3%.

Here are the number of wins for each club in 2023-24 in the 5 grades in Men’s NSW Premier Cricket

Manly – 60
St George – 54
Parramatta 52
NDs - 50
Wests - 47
Sydney Uni - 46
Easts - 44
Gordon - 42
Bankstown- 42
North Sydney - 38
Sutherland- 34
Penrith - 31
UNSW - 28
Campbelltown- 27
Sydney - 26
Fairfield - 25
Randwick Petersham - 25
Mosman - 25
Blacktown- 21
Hawkesbury- 14

It’s worth noting Manly won the Green Shield Premiership and finished on top of Pool A in the Poidevin Gray competition but lost to Randwick Petersham in the quarter final.

A mighty season by Manly, the benchmark for all to consider and reflect on.

Best wishes to all teams in the 5 grades who have made the semi-finals. Semi-finals and finals cricket is so much more fun, so enjoy and embrace the challenge and opportunities.

FINDING NEW STARS!

Howzattt caught up with some extremely enthusiastic young cricket players/fans from the JP21 Foundation who are watchig the final of the International Masters Cricket Over 40s World Cup today between South Africa and New Zealand. They were all thrilled to get their Howzattt - A Beginner's Guide to the Game of Cricket from us, and were soon busy collecting autographs from the South African team.

Named for the well-known South African all rounder cricketer, J.P. Duminy, who saw a need to bring cricket to the underpriviliged communities and schools of the Western Cape, and give them hope of fulfilling their dreams.
According their mantra online () "the JP21 Foundation is based on a sincere commitment to reigniting the passion and enthusiasm for the game of cricket in underprivileged communities and schools, particularly in the Western Cape areas of Mitchells Plain and Strandfontein. Our long-term objectives are to promote a positive and healthy lifestyle and allowing learners to have fun at the same time, all while playing cricket".

Howzattt is so pleased to have been able to play a part in inspiring the children from this amazing foundation. Our mission is the same as the foundation- bring cricket to as many as possible, and find new stars, wherever we can!

We hope to be able to partner with them in future projects as well, and we urge companies and sponsors to help make their dreams come true.

Stumps - summary of St George District Cricket Club from round 14 and 15 of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season

St George DCC Annual Charity Walk for Medical Research A Tribute to Warren Saunders OAM

On Saturday 2 March 2024 St George District Cricket Club will conduct its Annual Charity Walk to help raise awareness and much needed funds for the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation. This is the 11th year the Club has chosen SSMRF as their Charity Partner and I will again lead the Walk. This is your Club’s way of giving back to our local community while also supporting a very worthwhile organisation.

The Annual Walk will now also serve as a tribute to our former Patron, Warren Saunders OAM, who sadly passed away on 1 March 2023, almost a year to the day of this year’s Walk. Warren was a wonderful supporter of so many local organisations and always a generous contributor to this Annual SSMRF fundraiser.

Please consider making a donation to the St George DCC Charity Walk as we raise funds to support medical research projects in our local St George and Sutherland Hospitals.

Our First Grade team will take on Northern District in the Grand Final of the One-Day limited overs competition this Sunday.

Due to ground unavailability, we have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to host the final at Pratten Park.

This is a call out to the Wests cricketing community - sponsors, past players, families, and friends.

This is a significant day in the club’s history, and it would be amazing if you could all come down to Pratten on Sunday and support the club.

Good luck boys, bring home the silverware!

"Lindfield... A Great Test Proving Ground"

Last Friday, 20-year-old Shoaib Bashir made his Test cricket debut for England, against India, where he took four wickets.

Shoaib is English-born of Pakistani heritage and hadn’t even been born when teammate Jimmy Anderson started playing Tests. But last summer Shoaib was playing for Lindfield in the Shires competition, effectively Division Two Sydney cricket. “A great lad,” Lindfield official Greg Cook tells me. “We gave him a Saab with questionable roadworthiness. I had to meet up and jump-start it for him a few times.”

And he formed such friendships with the Lindfield team that three of them dropped everything to fly to India to be there and watch every ball. Gotta love this city.

*The three Lindfield lads visited Visakhapatnam, the site of the second test, and witnessed Shoaib's first Test wicket, Indian captain Rohit Sharma. While over there, the Lindfield boys met up with Shoaib and gave him a trophy, left behind on presentation day. Quite the journey!*

How is it that Australia goes to the Land of the Long White Cloud this week and plays only two Test matches against those highly competent Kiwis, when a third game could easily have been fitted in the program?

Instead, three pointless T20 games will be played.

So much for the pious outrage, by both nations, directed at the Sarth Efrikans about their cricket priorities. Test match cricket isn’t dying of exhaustion … it’s being slowly strangled by a greedy corporate culture intent on swelling coffers.

If you are going to throw stones, you shouldn’t live in a glass house.

Ever travelled 1350km in a car to play a game of cricket...?

Not one but two (!) teams did this to participate in our Remote Cricket Carnivals which have been taking place across the #northernterritory in Timber Creek (Dingo Cup), Borroloola (Barra Cup), Katherine (Nitmiluk Cup) and Tennant Creek (Rossy Williams Shield).

Big shout out to the 28 Teams and 175 players, match officials and volunteers who travelled extraordinary distances and across plenty of red dirt between October and February for nothing but a love of the game.

Huge respect to the OGs Marcus Rosas Rossy Williams who started these unique events 20 years ago and much love to the incredible people, teachers, schools, councils and communities that make up the wonderful Northern Territory and who helped and supported.

Next up ... Imparja Cup!

Week 19 – ‘The Opening Spell’

First ball – Historic, memorable, remarkable!

UTS North Sydney took on Sydney University in the Brewer Shield at St Andrew’s Oval on Sunday.

Sharon Julien opened the batting for the Bears, and some 50 overs later, held two new club records.

Julien became the first ever Bear to score a Brewer Shield century, adding 107 runs from 158 deliveries.
She also now holds the highest ever score for the UTS North Sydney women’s program.
Just moments later, teammate Sameeksha Kuncham collected only the second hat-trick in the history of the Bears’ women’s program. Two bowled, one caught and bowled. Kuncham finished with figures of 3-13 and the Bears claimed a 153-run victory.

Second ball – The Students are learning!

Just three weeks after Ira Patel notched Sydney University’s first ever century in a second-grade clash against Northern District, Frankie Nicklin has raised the bat after striking the program’s maiden first-grade ton!
