Ever travelled 1350km in a car to play a game of cricket...?

Not one but two (!) teams did this to participate in our Remote Cricket Carnivals which have been taking place across the #northernterritory in Timber Creek (Dingo Cup), Borroloola (Barra Cup), Katherine (Nitmiluk Cup) and Tennant Creek (Rossy Williams Shield).

Big shout out to the 28 Teams and 175 players, match officials and volunteers who travelled extraordinary distances and across plenty of red dirt between October and February for nothing but a love of the game.

Huge respect to the OGs Marcus Rosas Rossy Williams who started these unique events 20 years ago and much love to the incredible people, teachers, schools, councils and communities that make up the wonderful Northern Territory and who helped and supported.

Next up ... Imparja Cup!

Week 19 – ‘The Opening Spell’

First ball – Historic, memorable, remarkable!

UTS North Sydney took on Sydney University in the Brewer Shield at St Andrew’s Oval on Sunday.

Sharon Julien opened the batting for the Bears, and some 50 overs later, held two new club records.

Julien became the first ever Bear to score a Brewer Shield century, adding 107 runs from 158 deliveries.
She also now holds the highest ever score for the UTS North Sydney women’s program.
Just moments later, teammate Sameeksha Kuncham collected only the second hat-trick in the history of the Bears’ women’s program. Two bowled, one caught and bowled. Kuncham finished with figures of 3-13 and the Bears claimed a 153-run victory.

Second ball – The Students are learning!

Just three weeks after Ira Patel notched Sydney University’s first ever century in a second-grade clash against Northern District, Frankie Nicklin has raised the bat after striking the program’s maiden first-grade ton!

As he returns to the Marsh Cup, batting dynamo Jake Fraser-McGurk has received a ringing endorsement from Australia's best Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has earmarked Jake Fraser-McGurk as a future Test star, believing the 21-year-old blaster has as much talent as a young David Warner.

The Victorian, who crossed to South Australia ahead of the current domestic season – and will play for the Redbacks against the Vics in Thursday's Marsh Cup clash – is the talk of the cricket world for his fearless and cavalier approach to opening.

Vale Jack Trestrail

Sadly, Jack Trestrail (#303) has passed away in Brisbane, gradually leaving us after being subdued by dementia for sometime.

Tressy was a fine cricketer, making a name for himself in the Ex Services sides of the second half of the 1960's. Just to get a game for that team was an achievement as they were among the strongest club teams Armidale has seen. Earlier, he had been in the Easts stable.

Jack played the first of his 10 seasons with Waratahs in 1975 and was a handy allrounder in A grade until he made the move to A-Res grade in 1980, as a cornerstone of the legendary Waratahs Vets for two seasons. Not to leave it at that, when the Vets concept ended, he took his place with distinction in 2nd grade, making nearly 1,400 runs at 41 with 4 hundreds over the next three seasons before retirement. In all, he made 2,459 runs@27, took 124 wickets@17 and held 44 catches.

Club members will remember him for different reasons. Andrew Davis remembers the part Jack played in his foremost personal highlight at Waratahs, a 2nd grade 5th wicket record partnership of 142 v TAS in November of 1983, when his batting partner made 111 of his 530 runs that season. His 3rd grade Vets team mates would remember Tressy and Brian Joice opening the bowling and both bowling unchanged through two innings of a semi final v Churches and not content with rolling them for 91 & 74 - his own contribution 6-48 & 3-29 of nearly 30 overs for the weekend), then guiding the side home with a steady 39 not out as Waratahs scored 9-97 and won by just the one wicket. His players will recall his captaincy in 2nds was all positivity and encouragement. Others remember his kindness away from the field, as a rare businessman in the financial sector with a heart.

He was a bloke who loved to compete and he could be fierce in a scrap, one that you'd rather have on your side but he also loved to play the game for the fun which came from playing with his mates ... and of course, stirring the opposition!

Its ironic, that while in the end he had trouble remembering, he's a Tah we won't ever forget.

A special day at the Citi Power Centre today attending the 20-year reunion of Victoria's Pura Cup (Sheffield Shield) winning team of 2003/04. It was unfortunate that some players and assistant coach at the time Greg Shipperd (on coaching duties at present with NSW) couldn't be present but wonderful to see so many of the players again and a special call out to Jonathan Moss who made the trip down from Sydney especially for the occasion .

Also in attendance were two of the selectors ( often the unsung heroes in sport) from that wonderful period in Ray Bright and John MacWhirter along with other key off field personnel in Craig White and of course Elaine Parish and Shaun Graf as well as Greg Harris (Fosters) who was a wonderful sponsor of Victorian cricket through that golden era .

A wonderful bond exists between everyone from that era which of course was tragically impacted by the unnecessary loss of our State Coach in David Hookes and there were some wonderful tributes paid to Hooksey today about his impact on the group and Victorian cricket.

The reunion was held during the first days play of the Victoria v South Australia Sheffield Shield match and at stumps a number of the current player and coaching staff joined the 2003/04 group and again it was terrific to see the interaction between players and staff past and present.

Special thanks to the captain of the 2003/04 team Darren Berry and Bobby Quiney along with Tarryn Griffiths from CV for the organisation of today's function- it was great to be involved and to be able to contribute to the day’s activities.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s parents celebrate their son’s feat

The parents of Team India's 22-year-old opener Yashshvi Jaiswal glued in front of their TV set on Saturday morning. They didn't want to miss a single ball on Saturday when the 2nd day's play resumed.

The reason was understandable. The left-hand batter was unbeaten on 179 runs at the end of the first day's play against England in the second Test match.

"We were certain about his double hundred", the father, Bhupendra Jaiswal, running a hardware store in Suriyawan, Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh said.

"We have not travelled to Vishakhapatnam to watch the match from the ground. We did not go to Hyderabad either. The reason is: my son feels if we are at the ground, he comes under pressure and is unable to perform

Vale Bob Guthrie.

One of Mosman Cricket Club’s great men sadly passed away during the week. Bob had been involved with MCC for nearly 50 years.

Many of those spent on the sidelines watching his son Cameron play U9s and all the way through to 1st Grade.

Bob joined our Committee in the late 1980s and would remain there for over 30 years. Always prepared to help wherever he could, Bob was heavily involved in the club’s fight to save itself from relegation in the mid 90s. A fight every player is now grateful for.

Bob was also a decorated SCA umpire and spent many years driving around Sydney helping games of cricket run smoothly. In his later years, Bob spent every Saturday sitting on the hill at Allan Border Oval watching our current youngsters do their thing.

Bob was a life member along with his son Cameron. The only father and son Life Members of our club. Both will be remembered this Saturday afternoon at AB Oval. Rest in peace Bob.

Stumps - summary of St George District Cricket Club from round 11 and 12 of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season

ROUNDS 11 & 12
FIRST GRADE (Belvidere Cup & Limited Overs Cup) Rd 11
St George Defeated UNSW by 139 runs
St George 5/365 (B Macdonald 182, N Stapleton 62, E Pollock 53, L Bartier 27no, M Rodgers 23, K Patterson 15) defeated UNSW 226 (J Craig-Dobson 3-33, N Stapleton 3-53, L Bartier 2-26)

First game after the 2-week Xmas/New Year break, and we welcomed 1st Grade Player 276 – Dayle Carew. It was a pleasure personally to see Dayle reach this milestone, knowing him and his family for a long time. Dayle certainly earned this chance with some outstanding bowling performances in the lower grades, starting the season in 4’s and working his way to 1’s in just 11 games. It is true reward for his dedication to his own game.

After being sent in by the UNSW Captain, it didn’t take long for our openers Matt and Ed to take control of the UNSW bowling! Ed continued where he left off before Xmas, smashing runs off the second over. Matt also was effective as they started to plunder the bowling scoring an opening partnership of 76 off 66 deliveries until Ed finally missed one and was bowled. Matt followed soon after trying to continue the run assault holing out to point. Blake Macdonald was joined by Kurtis as they started to steady the ship a little, starting slowly and ensuring we reached a respectable target. Losing Kurtis after a drink break saw Captain Stapo join BMac and they started to take advantage of the weakening UNSW bowling. They went blow for blow in their 151-run partnership off 127 balls, as we quickly re-established a commanding dominance with our total.
