A salute to the Pakistan cricket team for providing an unexpectedly compelling series & playing in the true spirit of Test cricket. With limited preparation and missing a number of their key players, they fought tooth and nail in every Test and were a revelation on and off the field, proving that hard test cricket can be played without the aggro.

“The respect shown by the opposition throughout this series has been second-to-none,” Adam Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket.

“This series has been played in terrific spirit.” Mark Waugh added.

Captain Pat Cummins noted the sense of fraternity: "Out in the middle I think both teams play quite similarly, play hard but everyone's ready to joke with each other and have a bit of a laugh and not take it too seriously if the moment doesn't require it to be."

Life is rarely black and white and there are few saints and Dave Warner is clearly no saint but he has reformed and Australian cricket is far richer for his career even if it contains lots of grey.

He does so many things right on a cricket field. Hands down he is the best runner between wickets I have ever seen. He always runs hard and looks to put the fielder under pressure, never turning blind (unlike Dean Jones) and always holds his bat in the correct hand. This coupled with his aggressive stroke play means that things can get away from the bowling side very quickly indeed.

Vale Alan Wright - 1951-2024.

Our entire club is deeply saddened at the passing of club stalwart Alan Wright.

Wrighty passed away on the morning of 3 January surrounded by loved ones. He was a huge part of our club over many years, winning the 2012/13 Clubman of the Year as well as a premiership with his beloved main grade. He was well remembered for his net captaincy, as well as being Craig Little’s right hand main in M3s for many years.

He continued his support of the club, often seen at Manly Oval of late supporting the Manly boys and girls.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all of our club members that loved him so much.

We will provide information about his funeral when it comes to hand.

“The only difference between being uninformed and misinformed is that one is your choice and the other is theirs.”

Frank Sonnenberg, Listen to Your Conscience

Like all journeymen cricketers, the media space splashed about David Warner - whether it be main stream print or electronic media or the more insidious social media platforms - has only increased as his last appearance in Test matches has approached.

His runs, his media gaffs, his outspoken wife, the abhorrence of his role in the "sandpaper gate" crisis of faith ... they have all been blasted at anyone who would listen and even those who chose to turn away. The majority of it is popularist bullshit, written not to express an opinion but to mimic pub talk and please potential consumers of the modern world version of pulp fiction. Many who write, do so for approval and what better way than to avoid your own opinion - if indeed you are capable of such - and simply pile the steaming stuff on a soon to be extinct carcass.

South Africa’s test squad to tour New Zealand - A stab in the heart to test cricket

South Africa has unveiled a 14-man Test squad for the imminent 2-test series versus New Zealand, set to take place in New Zealand. A pivotal observation emerges from this announcement: merely two members from the victorious test eleven against India at Centurion have secured positions in this squad. The selection indeed reflects what is being labelled as a 'B-strength squad,' a move that resonates deeply within the realm of test cricket, signifying the concerning sway of commercialised formats like T20 cricket. This selection underlines the influence wielded by the Indian Premier League (IPL) and its franchises on global cricket—a concern that warrants attention.

Notably, Neil Brand, an uncapped player, assumes the captaincy—a choice that might seem unfamiliar to followers well-versed in contemporary cricket.

Six & Out featuring Brett Lee Paddo RSL - Paddington, Sydney on Wednesday, 3 January 2024

An invite from PM Anthony Albanese to play a gig, gets Legendary Aussie Cricketing Rockers SIX & OUT Back On Stage performing for the first time in 20 years. The guys had so much fun that they decided to once again combine their love of cricket with a live ROCK show.

With Brett Lee’s day job as a commentator on FOX sports, it’s been almost impossible for SIX & OUT to perform so they are taking the band to Brett for three shows while he is commentating the Australia V Pakistan test matches in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. So if you are a fan of cricket or a fan of Aussie Rock ’n’ Roll, then here is your chance to see these legendary cricketing rockers back on stage where they belong.

But let’s first rewind to circa 2000 when five NSW and Australian test cricketers Brett Lee, Shane Lee, Gavin Robertson, Richard Chee Quee & Brad McNamara would play cricket for their state and country during the day then sweat it out performing their brand of cool covers and their iconic hit Can’t Bowl, Can’t Throw to packed venues Australia wide.

Now fast forward to the summer of 23/24 and the boys are back in town and smashing it out of the park once again!

David Warner's form over the last 2 years has been very questionable, but there is no doubt that his retirement will leave a massive hole in this Australian team. Currently, there are 4 contenders to replace him at the top.

In my opinion, Cameron Bancroft must be selected for Adelaide. If Cameron Green is chosen as an opener, it implies that Sheffield Shield cricket means absolutely nothing and indicates a broken system. Whoever they pick, Cricket Australia needs to stick with this player for at least 12 months and back them against the West Indies and India at home, as well as New Zealand away.

Tahs move into Xmas break with dominant performances – Weekend Wrap 23rd December 2023

Saturday saw the Men conclude the first half of their season with a dominant showing against Campbelltown-Camden across the grades, the Tahs taking 4 wins from the 5 clashes with the Ghosts.

M1s bounced back strongly from an agonising defeat last start, with an important away victory. Losing the toss, a decent start from Joel Foster (21) was halted by a few quick wickets to have the Tahs 4/59, before Ryan Farrell (51) and Ned Hole (38) combined for a crucial 79 run partnership to shift the momentum, Faz anchoring the Tahs’ innings while Ned took the attack to the Ghosts’ bowlers. Late cameos from Lachlan Coyte (27) and Ryan Hadley (19*) pushing the score to a competitive 222. Early breakthroughs to Hadley and Tom Kaye kicked off the bowling innings, until the Ghosts consolidated to have the game in the balance. Both set batters were soon gone though as Bertie Foreman picked up the first before being involved again shortly after with a ripping catch off the bowling of Josh Seward. From there, a consistent flow of wickets including poles to Foreman and Joel Foster kept the Tahs on top, but it was Seward who starred picking up his maiden 1st Grade five-wicket haul in a classy display of fast bowling. The Tahs victorious by 51 runs as the Ghosts were bowled out for 171.

Five things we learned from Round 10 - NSW Premier Cricket 2023-24

There’s a top six starting to form

With this frantic season pausing for two weeks to catch its breath over the new year, the top six in First Grade is slowly taking shape. Anyone taking odds on who’ll be there will have closed the book on St George, who have opened the season with nine straight wins. Five Things usually reckons that, to make the finals, a side needs something between 54 and 60 points, which means that St George (on 56) could lose every game between now and March and still have a pretty good chance (although we do not recommend this approach). Saints are followed by Northern District (41), Mosman (37), Manly (33), Penrith (33) and Parramatta (31). But Penrith and Parramatta play each other in the next round, and Gordon (28), Easts (27), Wests (26), Fairfield (25) and Randwick-Petersham (25) will be looking to make up ground on whoever loses that one.

At the start of the 2021-22 NSW Premier Cricket Season Western Suburbs first grade batter Callum Hotham launched his career as an artist and his first project was the Western Suburbs dressing room at Pratten Park in Sydney.

Today there are 4 magnificent murals of Western Suburbs international players Michael Clarke, Phillip Hughes, Alan Davidson and Bob Simpson holding pride and place in the dressing room.

Pictured are Australian first-class umpires Gerard Abood and Greg Davidson in Western Suburbs home dressing room in front of the Michael Clarke mural. Greg Abood played NSW Premier Cricket for Western Suburbs and Greg Davidson took 333 first grade wickets for Parramatta.
