Test great Nathan Lyon is one of three additions to the NSW Men’s Team squad to take on Victoria in the Marsh Sheffield Shield fixture that begins at the MCG on Thursday.

The teams will play for the Hodge-Matthews trophy, a perpetual trophy on the line each time the two old foes play in a Sheffield Shield fixture. Named in honour of cricketers Brad Hodge (Victoria) and Greg Matthews (NSW), the establishment of this trophy is to celebrate and recognise the historical significance of the Victoria-New South Wales cricket rivalry.

Lyon is joined in the 13-player Blues squad announced today, along with left-arm quick Ben Dwarshuis and batter Blake Macdonald. Ross Pawson and Kurtis Patterson drop out of the 12 that were named for last week’s team that played South Australia.

After a severe injury that has marked one of the biggest challenges of his career, Nathan Lyon now sees no end in sight

Like scores of bleary-eyed cricket fans Down Under who lived every moment of this winter's Ashes series in England, Nathan Lyon did not miss a ball – even after injury dislodged him from the action.

For Australian fans watching on television in the dead of night, the spiralling of their team's fortunes after their ever-present spinner left Lord's on crutches with a four-centimetre tear in his right calf was an increasing source of exasperation.

For Lyon, watching Australia play Tests without him for the first time in a decade, it was akin to a mourning process. "I found myself struggling quite a bit mentally," he told cricket.com.au ahead of his Marsh One-Day Cup return on Friday.

There’s lots to admire about England's Test captain Ben Stokes.

Everything he does, he does well and he has already outstripped Botham and Flintoff because he has made the transition from player to inspirational leader, something neither of them achieved. He's a better batsman than Botham and a better bowlers than Flintoff and can now lay a serious claim to England's greatest allrounder. He is a ferocious, fearless competitor who doesn't accept defeat as an option …

... yet, he has been crippled in the past by anxiety and panic attacks, even in the 12 months leading up to the recent Ashes. His honesty in dealing with his mental health is the most compelling reason to be an admirer, regardless of your team allegiance.

Director Sam Mendes has captured his battle with his demons.

Five things we learned from Round 3 - NSW Premier Cricket 2023-24

Jordan Gauci is a throwback

When the 50-over format was first devised, back in the late 1970s, the role of the opening batsman was very different from the one that has evolved today. Today, the job of the opener is to take advantage of the hard ball and fielding restrictions by smashing the ball all over the place and getting the innings off to a rapid start. Initially, though, the idea was that an opener should play steadily, not doing anything too dramatic but ensuring that his side had wickets in hand for an assault on the bowling late in the day. Against Blacktown on Saturday, Sydney University’s Jordan Gauci produced a classic of that genre. Although he was always positive, he didn’t reach twenty until the 16th over of the innings, and he was happy to play a supporting role to Ryan McElduff for much of their partnership of 111. But then, at the end of the innings, he cashed in so effectively that, with Oli Zannino, he took 90 runs from the last nine overs. Gauci was strongest off his pads and on the back foot through the off side, he ran hard throughout and reached his hundred by pulling Jeremy Nunan brutally for four. He was still there at the end, unbeaten on 139 from 137 balls, and proving that sometimes the old fashioned methods still work.

Chun dismissed the Parramatta top three comprising of two Big Bash signings and an underage National Champion, before going on to claim the middle-order via means of a hat-trick to finish with figures of 6-19. Men go 4 from 5 to return to winning ways – Weekend Wrap 14th/15th October 2023

The tables turned across the weekend with a very different series of results compared to last round, as the men went 4 from 5 to return to winning ways while the women had a frustrating weekend despite a phenomenal run chase victory in W3s.

M1’s bounced back superbly from last week’s nail-biting defeat, with a bonus point victory against UNSW. Winning the toss and bowling, Josh Seward (2/34) struck early, before it was the spin duo of Bertie Foreman (4/28) and Joel Davies (2/22) who bowled brilliantly in tandem to turn the game in the Tahs’ favour. UNSW all out for 172 inside 42 overs. The Tahs’ run chase was off to the perfect start courtesy of some clean hitting early from Matt Brewster (53) and Joel Foster (34). With the bonus point in sight, the Davies brothers then combined to seal a bonus point victory for the Tahs, Ollie finishing 52no and Joel 17no.

Western Suburbs 4th grade traveled to Fairfield oval to take on Fairfield-Liverpool in the 3rd round of the 2023/24 season.

For the third week in a row Wests lost the toss and were invited to bat first. The first over of the innings set the tone for Western Suburbs with Damien Guild hitting a 4 and 6 through and over mid-wicket. The first 2 rounds Wests struggled to build a strong platform in the top order, with the top 3 being challenged this week. Damien and Flynn Nicholls must have taken this personally with a magnificent opening stand of 205 at close to a run a ball. Flynn the first to fall caught behind for 81 (including 8 fours and 1 six) his first grade 50. The onslaught continued with Abhinav Kamsali joining Damien at the crease. Damien was dismissed a short while later with the score 241 for a better than run a ball 130 (including 13 fours and 2 sixes) his first ever hundred.

I was pleased to partner with Paul Chambiras in his CAS 1st XI umpiring debut in Round 1 between St Aloysius and Cranbrook at Willoughby on 7-14 October 2023. Paul is an experienced, former NSW Premier Cricket umpire, and is a welcome addition to our panel.
The match went well with Cranbrook recording a comfortable victory. It was another high standard schoolboy contest featuring centuries by Sam (Cranbrook) and Tommy (Aloys), plus a 5/for by Riley (Cranbrook).
I have umpired in the CAS 1st XI cricket competition since 2009-10 and have been the Convenor of the CAS Umpires’ Panel since 2016-17. On special occasions, we get a photo of the Captains, Umpires & Coaches, and the first photo is this sequence is from the recent Aloys v. Cranbrook match.
I would welcome enquiries from experienced umpires who may wish to join our panel, as we have room for two more umpires.

Another brilliant win last Saturday for Randwick Petersham taking on Hawkesbury in a 1st Grade limited overs match at Benson’s Lane, Richmond. The side won by 58 runs bowling out the Hawks for 168 in reply to its 9-226 off 50 overs. The Hawks’ bowling subdued the visitors’ batting to some extent, with top-score coming from number 7 bat Angus McTaggart, making 55 off 66 balls while hitting 6 fours. Earlier, skipper Riley Ayre had set the scene with a solid 50 off 87 balls with just 2 boundaries. Alex Ross, in his second Belvidere Cup match, made a valuable 41 off 56 balls. Former Australian left-arm spinner, Steve O’Keeffe ensured runs were hard to come by, taking 4-34 off 10 overs.

In the run chase, the locals made a reasonable start to be 2-61 off 15 overs before losing 3-19. From 5-102, the Randy Petes bowlers really hit their straps taking the last 5 wickets for only 66 runs to pocket the points

Western Suburbs 5th Grade hosted Fairfield Liverpool at Punchbowl Oval in Round 3 of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season.

Western Suburbs won the toss and without hesitation batted first, however found themselves in some trouble being 2/39 after 10 overs with wickets to Talha Yaseen and Ryan Rajesh putting Fairfield Liverpool on the front foot.

A superb 82 run partnership between club debutant Kit Keey and Jack Clark got Wests back in it before Clark was dismissed by Alexander Gomez for 38. Keey fell quickly after for 60. Will Zakostelsky continued his run of super form adding 38 with the middle to lower order contributing to get Wests to 8/219 at the completion of their 50 overs.
