David Dilley and Tim Donahoo Awarded Life Membership – NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association

The Association honoured long-serving members David Dilley and Tim Donahoo, as the pair were elected Life members ahead of the Annual General Meeting held this week.

Dilley and Donahoo become NSWCUSA’s 56th and 57th Life members respectively as they were upgraded unanimously by members in attendance.

Another fascinating Ashes series which again emphasises the importance and relevance of the five Test series. Australia retained the Ashes despite playing the lesser cricket overall.

England won more of the scheduled 75 sessions. They were the aggressors to Australia’s scrambled defenders. England deserved three Test victories and threw away a fourth when they blew clear chances at Edgbaston.

Stokes was far and away the more superior captain: Cummins heroic but flustered, bereft of options, ideas or comeback. His best contributions were glib comments at press conferences.

Pat Cummins showed little faith in Todd Murphy in the 3rd test when he only bowled 2 overs in England 2nd innings and England chased 254 to win with the loss of 7 wickets.
Murphy was not selected for the 4th test and Australia didn’t play a spinner on a very flat wicket.
Murphy played the 5th test and took 6 wickets.
Lyon and Murphy both played 2 tests in the series.
Lyon - 9 wickets at 29.3 with a strike rate of a wicket every 44 balls.
Murphy – 7 wickets at 25.8 with a strike rate of a wicket every 32 balls.
Murphy also averaged 19 with the bat.
A captain should be showing faith and building their players confidence.

Congratulations to our President and former Australian Test cricketer Michael Roy Whitney AM

At Randwick Petersham's 22nd AGM Whit was elected unanimously for his 23rd term as Club President. In the combined 263 seasons he is now the longest serving President well surpassing the previous records from our Foundation Clubs - 20 seasons held by Petersham-Marrickville's John Ross and 14 seasons held by Randwick's Bill Beath.

Out4Cricket delighted to host with Warwickshire County Cricket Club the first ever LGBTQ+ Cricket tournament

As August rapidly approaches I wanted to update you on what what Leo Skyner and I have been doing through Out4Cricket. We have shared some of our season highlights below:

We were delighted to host (with Warwickshire County Cricket Club) the first T10 Inter County tournament in June - with teams representing Middlesex, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. To recognise the achievement of players selected in the Randwick Petersham 1st XI, the club introduced a capping system in 2001- 02, its first season.

Players retain the number they are allocated for all time. The last number allocated will also reflect the total number of players to play in the club's 1st Grade team. A total of 152 have now played in the 1st XI since the club's creation 22 years ago. This season, six players made their debut as 1st graders with Randwick Petersham. Each was presented with his cap by an official or representative of the club before the start of play in their first match in the top grade. The capped players for 2022-23 are:

Dear Cricket Friends,

We are reaching out to you with heavy hearts following the passing of Kate Nicolai after a battle with cancer at the young age of 32, leaving behind her loving husband Andrew and their children Isabella (10) and Cooper (8).

Kate passed away on Saturday 22 July 2023..

As we gather to mourn this profound loss, we recognize that in addition to the emotional toll, there are practical challenges that lie ahead for the family.

Kate’s husband Andrew has been a member of Stockton & Northern District Cricket Club in Newcastle for the past 5 years and previously played for Toronto Cricket Club for many years.

Community. We tend to throw this word around quite a bit in our workplaces, our schools and even our political landscape, but what does it really mean and how does sport play a part in ensuring our community is a healthy one? In the educational space, i.e. schools, sport is a vital aspect of the holistic development of individuals, that in turn go on to influence the society in which we live.

As coach of a cricket team, I believe this “team” is an excellent representation of what a community is and does. Indeed, one could draw the analogy from any number of sports but for this purpose, I’ll stick to the cricket ideology.

Six NSW rising stars have been named in a 16-player Australian squad to tour England for a multi-format Under-19 series, which starts in August.

The Youth Selection Panel has selected Cameron Frendo, Ryan Hicks, Sam Konstas, Rafael MacMillan, Harjas Singh and Tom Straker, following training camps in Brisbane and Sri Lanka, where they will return for the 2024 ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Singh and Straker will make their second appearance in the gold and green colours this year. The pair were members of an Australian U19 squad that secured a series victory against a touring England U/19 team in January and February.

Hicks, Konstas and MacMillan are set to further progress through the national pathway system, building on their previous success of winning the U19 National Championship title in a dominant NSW Metropolitan side.

The Ashes since 1989
Since 1989 when the Australian cricket team was labelled the worst team to land on England soil there has been 19 Ashes series played in England and Australia.
After the 4th Test was drawn overnight Australia has retained the Ashes and currently 2-1 up in the series.

Of the 19 Ashes series since 1989:
• Australia has won or retained the Ashes in 14 series.
• England has won or retained the Ashes in 5 series.

Including the 4th test in 2023 and since the first test of the 1989 series there has been 97 Tests played and Australia has won 55, England have won 23 and 19 have been drawn.
Australia has won or retained the Ashes in five series away from home.
England has won or retained the Ashes in one series away from home.

Rob Lavery Awarded UTS North Sydney Cricket Club's 51st Life Membership

At our AGM on Friday 21 July, Rob Lavery was unanimously awarded Life Membership. His nomination speech, tabled by Pat Lindsay, is reproduced below.

The Management Committee of the UTS North Sydney District Cricket Club has unanimously agreed to recommend to the members that Mr Robert Lavery be confirmed as the club's 51st Life Member. Rob joined the Bears in season 2011-12 at the tail end of a period of sustained success for the club. Rob started out in Fourth Grade but quickly demonstrated his wares and ultimately moved up to Second Grade.

Vale Ken Muller

The Western Suburbs District Cricket Club is saddened to hear of the passing of one of the Club’s greats, Ken Muller, an opening batsman whose career spanned fourteen consecutive seasons in first grade.

Ken passed away peacefully in Wyong Hospital last Thursday, July 20th, 2023, aged 87. A private funeral will be held on the Central Coast.

A contemporary of Alan Davidson, Bob Simpson and Wally Wellham, Ken featured in three first grade premierships: 1956-57, 1959-60 (as captain) and 1963-64.

Vale Hedley Brian Taber – Another Gordon legend has left us

Brian Taber - Born 29 April 1940. Died 21 July 2023. Right-hand batsman and wicketkeeper

When our Club Secretary Andrew Falk sent out a message to the Gordon cricket community on Friday last that our dear friend Brian “Tabsie” “Herbie” Taber had died that morning his message finished with the following statement:

“Another Gordon Legend has left us”

The word legend is possibly overused in today's society, however, if we use the following definition then we certainly know the impact that Brian Taber had on his family, friends and the Gordon and Australian cricketing communities.
