VALE PETER FINNEY

It is with sadness that the MPCA Board acknowledge the recent passing of one of the Peninsula’s finest cricketers and umpires, Peter Finney.

Peter made an incredible contribution to MPCA cricket as a player, coach, and umpire. He played for the Karingal Cricket Club for 8 seasons and spent 3 of those as Captain Coach. He then went on to Coach Heatherhill Cricket Club for two seasons and then coached the Heatherhill juniors for over 10 years. His efforts were recognised by Heatherhill when they awarded him Life Membership of the club. In his earlier days Peter also played Victoria Premier Cricket for Prahran as well as 10 seasons of cricket at Carnegie.

Peter spent an incredible 36 years as a cricket umpire, mainly in the MPCA, but he also umpired for two seasons in Premier Cricket. Highly regarded by all that had the pleasure to meet him, Peter will be sadly missed, but will always be remembered as one of the greats of the MPCA.

Our condolences go out to Peter’s children Anitia, Gareth, Jacinta, Karina, Amber and all of his grandchildren.
Peter’s funeral will be held at Tobin Brothers Mt Martha this Friday 31st May @ 2pm and followed by drinks at the Dava Hotel.

The Sorrento Cricket Club is very excited to announce the signing of Dimitri Mascarenhas as our Club Captain/Coach for season 2024-25.

‘Dimi’, as he is affectionately known around the club, represented England in both ODI and T20 formats, and during one match against India in 2007, deposited Yuvraj Singh for five consecutive sixes to close out their innings.

He has an ECB Level 3 coaching qualification and has held coaching roles at Hampshire, Middlesex, the Rajasthan Royals and the Hobart Hurricanes. In June 2015, after a tenure as the head coach of domestic side, Otago, Dimi was appointed as a full-time bowling coach with New Zealand.

He brings a wealth of experience to the role and we are very excited for him to begin working with the club across all grades - especially our junior cricketers.

Please join us in wishing Dimi and his family, including sons Lenny and Viv, a very warm welcome to the club and the extended Sorrento community.

The Queensland Cricket Foundation is backing a campaign to have all KFC Queensland Premier Cricket club grounds outfitted with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) unit for the 2024-25 season.

The Foundation is aiming to raise $15,000 as part of an end of financial year fundraising campaign to provide the final five AED units to ensure 100 percent of Premier club venues are covered by the life-saving equipment.

That will mean all fields used during the summer by Premier clubs will always have a unit accessible, whether during playing, training or if a member of the public requires urgent medical attention.

A little proud dad moment.

In the the midst of zillion things happening around me, I'm super happy to share the great news that Kaya has been honoured with the ‘Junior Female Player of the Year’ and the ‘Best Batter of the Year' award by Cricket NSW for U13 girls. I believe, she might be the youngest recipient in the history of Cricket NSW to receive these awards. This has been a fabulous present for her 12th birthday.

Congratulations to all the other super talented award winners as well - it was truly an outstanding and jam packed event!

Throughout the rep season, Kaya broke numerous records, notably becoming the highest aggregate run scorer in junior girls rep/district cricket history, including U15, with an impressive 399 runs at an average of 99.75 with a strike-rate just over 100%. This includes a quick fire of 106*, playing just 9 games of 30 over Mollie Dive matches, and also making her the youngest to achieve this milestone. Kaya has also had taken 7 wickets along with 9 catches as a Vice-Captain for Parramatta. In addition, she has done some handy contributions playing in U15 comp as well.

Also, Kaya scored more than 1,000+ runs 2 years in a row and taken several wickets (61+42) playing club matches with boys and senior girls too.

I'd like to extend my gratitude to all the coaches at PDCA and PWGCC for allowing her to train with the grade players. Without your support, her success wouldn't have been possible.

Hope she continues to play the game we love this way for some more years... although she's the top basketball player in the state.

G'day all. Just a heads-up about the middle grade kids' book 'Spirit of the Warriors' that will be released later this year by Crack-A-Story Publishing. The manuscript will soon be going to the printer and will be released in time for India's next cricket tour to Australia later this year. Here's a tease from the blurb. Smiles from afar, Knighty.

'It’s the start of an Australian summer, and a drought is raging in the bush. For strapping farm boy, Jack Riordan, swinging a cricket bat is the best way to escape from daily hardships. But what happens when an Indian family arrives in the small town of Stony Creek to begin a new life?

Suddenly, Jack is no longer the number one player in the district. That honour belongs to Ajeet Sharma who quickly becomes the star of the local school. Despite jealousies and misunderstandings, the boys must somehow work together on the field.

As their journey progresses, they learn each has painful secrets that have affected their lives. What are they? And what can the boys learn from them? The answers come from the strength of human spirit. From the author of 'My Life: Brett Lee' comes the story of Ajeet and Jack, and the unpredictable fortunes of the Stony Creek Public School cricket team.'
